I just bought a lund tyee and want to mount a kicker motor. I have decided on the new lightweight mercury 9.9 4 stroke. I will use the boat mainly on lake michigan but also in Canada. In canada there is one creek that is about 2 miles long that has 180 bends in it every 100 ft or so. It pretty shallow and the only way I think I will get through is a kicker motor. Dont want to chance the main motor. This requires power control as you have to gun the gass to make the sharp turns. It's really fun in a fishing boat going full throtle but no way in the big Lund.

A dealer has quoted me $3400 for the motor and entire setup with stearing, 2nd- seperate throtle, electric tilt/start, and gass line run all controled from the driver seat. I cant affoard this right now but would eventually like it in the future. The motor is only 2k so that is a lot of money for labor, 1400.

So...I am trying to create a quick fix but still have the option to do this at some point in time. I plan on buying the motor and running the stearing and fuel lines my self. I would like to buy the tiller motor with electric start. I would then use a power control switch to control the motor speed. The only thing I would not have would be power tilt and power gear shifting.

For stearing I plan on just use the bar connection either frount or rear of the motor connection methods. Do they both allow you to tilt either or motor up with the other one down? The big motor will definatly need to be up high.

I would like to get the tiller model (controls on the handle) in case I want to use the motor on another boat some day. If I do will I be able to convert to a throtle control later or do I need to buy the non tiller motor right away. How is the gear shift converted and the motor tilt from a tiller to a nontiller motor?

Do they sell just the throtle control and I could install it?

I hope this make some sence. I am getting a headace trying to firgure out what is the best method

I really appreciate all the help and suggestions

Sean

Well Sean,

On my rig I had the controls for the kicker done by the dealer and if the money allows I would surely do it again. I've read your post a couple of times and you state this is pretty much out of the question, so in my mind the best kicker for your rig, now remember this is just my opinion, would be a Yamaha T-8. Electric start and tilt on the handle, smooth running with power and excellent control either by the handle and connected to the main motor. I have merc's on my rig and love the motors, I put the T-8 on my dads rig and may be leaning towards Yami's on my next ride.....Now with all that being said, Yamaha is not giving these motors away. I do believe that my dad paid somewhere around $2200 for his. Wish I could be of more help. If memory serves me right I believe Kroppe is in the process of doing what you speak of, maybe we could get him to chime in and let you know of his progress..........

Sean,

Just a thought, buy a used kicker with 3 extra props ($3-$500)and to heck with all the extra stuff you are wanting. I have the lund Tyee and my 8 merc kicker does just fine. I steer from the back of the boat with the tiller, may want to see how the short shaft rides on your rig, I have the long. I also had a different boat that I hooked the kicker to the main I/O via steering linkage and it worked OK but I had to have the main IO down. Also controled the throttle at the back of the boat. I just couldnt see spending that much $$ for up front steering and throttle, and tilt.

Good luck and let us know what you do.

I have a yamaha t8 with power tilt and I must say if you have not already got the merc. I would check it out, I have ran it for a year now and its the best kicker I have ever used. Vary quiet, smoth and lots of tork. I realy like the power tilt it makes for a vary solid mount. Just my 2 cents.
