We've been thinking about installing a paddlewheel type speedometer for trolling purposes (Saginaw Bay walleye). My question is: are the wheel type speedomters more accurate than the speed readings from the GPS? And if so, how much difference? We are currently using the GPS for our trolling speed adjustments. Thanks in advance for the reply. - Rex

For trolling in areas with current, I prefer the paddlewheel. The GPS will give you your speed over ground but does not take into account the effects of current on your baits. ie...if your going down stream on a river at 6 mph with a 3 mph current, your GPS will read 6 mph but your paddlewheel will read 3 mph but that is the speed that is acting on your lures. If your in in an area with no or little current, I think the GPS is probably a little more accurate though.

Also keep in mind that surface current will differ from current at different depths. Not just in speed but many times in direction also depending on the body of water and wind direction. I would preffer to go by GPS speed and make adjustments by the given situation.

I have both and prefer the GPS for accuracy ---there are exceptions
like currents on rivers, but I fish in LSC and find the GPS most accurate. :cwm27:
