No toms, but lots of memories after girl’s first hunt

“It looks like we’ve got some birds around,” I whispered to 13-year-old Rachel Andreska, who nodded her camouflage-netted head, a subterfuge that did little to hide her cascading light blond hair, in acknowledgement.Andreska, a 7th-grade student at Prairie River Middle School in Merrill, was one of 20 youths selected for a special guided turkey hunt offered through the cooperation of the Lincoln County Sports Club, Department of Natural Resources and the National Wild Turkey Federation. I was her designated mentor.
Similar youth hunts, usually held a week or two before the April 14 opening of the regular turkey season, were conducted throughout Wisconsin this spring, involving hundreds of teenagers and adult volunteers as well as numerous local NWTF chapters and hunting organizations.
