Its time to get boats and crew together for the 15th of May
This is a league event. Everyone and anyone are welcome. There is always boats looking for crew for these events, Just post up your interest.
Same rules apply as previous events....except for a few minor changes-a premium has been placed on Kings & Steelhead and the start times have changed.
Meet at DNR launch 5:30-6:00 am on League day. Money must be paid prior to fishing to be eligible for any fish awards for that day.
$15.00 per boat Fishing times are as soon as you have paid but no earlier than 5:30am to 1:00pm. What that means is Pay your money and go fishing...Return to the launch as soon as possible, Weigh in at the farm will begin at 2:00 and your fish with at least one crew member be there no later than 2:30pm. This will give anyone that needs to run up river to boat slips ample time to get their boat put away and make weigh-in. We may adjust these times depending on daylight/boat traffic etc.
9-rod limit, weight one DNR limit with one exception, no lake trout in the catch. The limit is a 3 man limit. No cull. No limit on number of boats that can enter. No Charter boats. Set up captains and crew thru the website. 1st place takes 50%; second place takes 20% and 3rd place takes 10% based on all entry fees received. Big fish based on weight takes 20%.
Scoring is 10pts per fish and 1pt per lb. Exceptions- Kings are worth 2 additional points, Steelhead worth 5 additional points, No partial points, all points rounded down. Ties will be broken by largest fish in your catch.
No blow date....event will turn into a walleye river fish if too windy.
We are 30 days away right now...time to get your boat and crew together and post it up on the site. Do we need to make any other modifactions to the rules?
Who is in? I think another boil is in order after the weigh-in.....

I'm in if you need a crew Mark-or if you don't I 'll start taking offers ;) .
Fish Boil sounds like a dandy idea. Maybe so you and Steve don't get stuck w/ all the $$ take up a collection at the ramp for those who will be in attendance for the lunch or at least put up a can for donations for the food, etc.-just a suggestion.
Fishing ought to be in FULL swing for this one!

I hope my crew does not back out at the last minute like they did for the April 17 one.
Darrin should I start the bidding??? :D :D

04-16-2004, 09:17 AM
Darrin, I have you on my boat......figured it would be a given....I am leaving the 3rd slot open for my father again.
I think this time and for future league events for the "after effects" at the farm, a donation can will be placed. Any extra left over and we wil put the remainder towards the next event...
I was worried about the weigh-in times..for those of you that plan to run offshore, remember to calculate your run times back to make weigh-in....
Do we need to make adjustments?
Thanks Tim for the Sticky!!

Sorry Steve-My allegiance has to be w/ a boat that I know the seats won't break. :p
Not to mention I think Mark's gunnels are lower which makes it easier to "swing 'em in"

I got a commitment from the Fishdog that he and the "Cute Miller Crew" will be there.
After yesterday, it was decided that instead of a fish boil, we are doing a chicken BBQ. I will furnish the chicken/sauces/ and all the trimmings but to cover the costs we decided to increase the entrys a bit. In addition to the $15.00 a boat, we will be collecting 5.00 per person to cover all the food costs, plates, untensils and to include the soft drinks and a few cases of brown pops. Any money left over we will put it towards additional beverages or save it for the next event. We will have BBQ grilles set up and I will whip up another culinary delight for all.
Anyone have any difference of opinion or are we all good with this idea? I understand if you cant stay for the luncheon that your boat fee will stay at $15.00.
I do need some type of commitment so that I know how much food to purchase and how many to plan for.
This will be another event that you won't want to miss.
I know that there are boats that will be looking for crews and we can add as many boats that want to fish.....Make your plans now and get your game plan in order....Caz needs to be beat and may Spanky catch little fish!

Hey guys,
You must get in this tournament, it is alot of fun and the guys are great to talk to. Spanky..... Now he is alot of laughs. He loves to tell alot of jokes and beleve me there are pretty funny. All you guys are a great group of fishermen and I sure had alot of fun, I sure hope I can come back and fish with you all again. ALSO...... :Modified_ If you do get to try this tournament with these guys, you must stay and try out the turkey. It is very good and HOT :cheeky-sm . But most of all the fishing was fun and the food is very good.
Thanks guys,

I see all of these posts with all of you doin' these tourney's and they sound SO GREAT!
I would just LOVE to get in on all the good times,... but WHY do you always have to have them so dang far away ?? :Protest_e
Do you think that MAYBE you could have some up a little higher at a port like Frankfort or Manistee?
I'd have to drive for 6 hours just to hit the ports you guys presently go out of for a day of fishin!! :coco:

77 mm Magnum,
Hey what you should do is start a league at Manistee. Then the St. joe league and the West michigan league can have a big tournament. The closes one that you could be in is our league. The West Michigan, we fish out of Port Sheldon then the last 2 we go to Muskegon. Just a thought, but I think it would be pretty cool if we had 3 leagues and had the world series fishing tournament.

Hmmmm,... now that's a pretty interesting thought! :coolgleam
I don't live on the West side of Michigan. :Modified_  I just made that suggestion to bring a couple of tourney's up closer to the northern section of Michigan for any members up here who would like to join the festivities!
But maybe I can do that thought one better,... I'm going to have to bring that idea with me to the next meeting of our local Thunder Bay Steelheaders Assn. and see how many are people would be interested in forming a "EAST" Michigan League. Of course I'd get them enroll to our Michigan Sportsmans website so everything will be a members event. :grouphug: :woohoo1:
So what are your thoughts about that?? :xzicon_sm

I have a couple things here...
THESE GUYS ARE A CLASS ACT!!! They bring southern hospitality to a whole new meaning. I have a GREAT time everytime i'm there...Even if it is just making fun of Spanky  ...And putting old furniture into his marine vessel...
This tourney is a must fish if you can...
The other thing is...for 7MM, There is a little thing that has been dubbed the Michigan Sportsman Fun Tourney in Manistee Michigan...It is Labor Day Weekend and all fisherpersons are welcome. It is a really good time and the food and comedy are unparrelelled.

Sixshooter, ... is the Michigan Sportsman Fun Tourney in Manistee for the whole 3 days ?? (Sept 4th-6th) Sounds like a camp out and fishing weekend to me. :woohoo1:
That's something I could do,.. Tow out the cruiser to fish in, and do some cook-out camping! I'll need some one to e-mail me with the specifics on this event,.. and what is the minimum draft needed to load and unload out of their launching facilities. (I'm lookin' at 3 ft.) :help:
I'll also have to see if the little lady has made any plans also :16suspect but I think she has a thing she's suppose to attend for her job (Medical Seminar) right around then.

The tourney itself is only the Saturday of that weekend. However, Most of the guys who are fishing that weekend are in fact there the whole weekend to fish. So yes it is one of those fish till you sleep in your campsite...type of weekends... If you look up Whit1 he will have some more specifics on how it all happens...
And they have a VERY good launch ramp at the First Street Beach. You can launch a 26' their pretty easy...

I didn't notice anyone picking on me, heck when Steve A is around, I think we are all pretty safe from that. 7mm the manistee gig is a riot. Unless you don't care to stand around a campfire with a bunch of stinky fishermen and tell lies while drinking low carb beers! :yikes: I know after last yrs labor day fish fest, I had to take an additional day off just to recoop! My side hurt for a week after! If you are a serious, no smiles type of angler...I would avoid this bunch big time.

2nd chance??? I don't think so, no, I'm postive about that...will not happen....do you realize the fear having someone back you to the ramp and have the one of the boat trailer wheels rolling dead center on the dock with me in the boat....sheezz, this is after going sideways---I mean sideways in blocking 4 ramps at once--, yep wont happen.....maybe with Steves boat....not mine....positve.....Did you notice I gave you a rope and I backed the boat down?....yep, that learning curve was a straight line....

Mark,
If you had to choose between giving Darrin a 2nd chance or letting your wife and mine and your daughter take your boat out and fish against us in this outting :banghead3. I think I would choose the wives over Darrin backing the boat in. :yikes:

04-19-2004, 02:23 PM
Yep...both issues are pipe dreams---
But i must say, My wife has backed in my boat several times and never had a problem....
Now as far as them gals taking my boat and using it on the 15th, ---oh what a nightmare.....gives me cold sweats thinking about it.....but then I get the giggles when it was your boat they were talking about...not much more they can break....

Ok, time to get this back on track for the original intentions----
come on guys (and Gals), get your boats listed and post up if your looking for a ride or a crew.....
Note, I kinda need a head count on this one for the BBQ after that we are putting together....there has been some talk that if someone would like to place a camper for the night there is plenty of room at the farm....We also have a 16x16 lodge tent up for anyone that would like to use it...bring your own cot.
Darrin & I maybe looking for one...I will know in about a week.
for anyone that has not fished with us yet....you are truly missing the boat on these mini-tourneys....They are a blast!!

So Crawdaddy, count us in.
Will dem chikens still be live whens we gits there? :evilsmile
I think the extra 5 bucks is a good call.....as long as we win some of it back!

Mark,
how many boats are a for sure in this so far?
YOU REALLY WANT TO FISH THIS EVENT GUYS. You do NOT understand how much fun you will have...
You will NOT find a better group of fisherman nor will you find a funnier group of people...And I don't just mean funny looking.
I will be there one way or another...
At this point I am planning on fishing with Rick (Catfishhoge) and Stef...
If for some reason Rick cannot fish I will still be down there...
Have to figure out the details on who's boat we will pull down though...

At this point, I have 3 confirmed for my boat...me myself and I...
Not sure if the wife is fishing with me or not yet...will know more later.
I am pretty confident I'll have a boat full regardless...if not I'll post for needed crew members. So put me down for the tourney and probably just me for the weigh-in....Mark I'll contact you if the count for the cookout changes.

Larry, I have complete trust in her. Everyone that has met her goes away with admiration. This past Sunday, I just watched her graduate from college as well with her assoc. degree. This fall she is headed to California to complete her BA at California Pacific Univeristy in vocal music and tour with Young Americans. Mom & I are dreading the day she leaves. What is nice is that both her and her brother (who is going into his 4th year at Western) are home for the summer and we supect it will be the last time they are both with us for the summers. I know Stef will be touring with Young Americans for the next 4 years....
Untill then, she wants to fish and meet new people. She really has a lot of fun at the farm during the social hours....

I will be shipping Mark a selection of the new Fish Dog Co. Trolling Flies prior to the event. When you check in that morning everyone can choose one fly as they pay.
It’s my way to get you to try these flies.
If the big fish of the day comes on a Fish Dog Co. Fly.....
I’ll give a dozen more flies and a couple of Opti-Dodgers!
For more information on Fish Dog Trolling Flies I have a brochure

One more thing...have you contacted Charlie at The Fishin Hole in St. Joseph about carrying your flies? He has some fly manufactures in there now, but he may be interested...If so, he does have a website and an email so maybe you can send him your flyer...just a suggestion, take it or leave it. Mark e-mailed me and said we might have 15 boats!
Thats 4 dozen flies!
Plus a possibility of another dozen and some Dodgers!
I gonna have to eat alot of turkey to break even on this deal!
Darrin...you make me laugh! "like a dealer giving away a sample of crack" YEH YEH...Thats what I am....I'm your crack fly dealer!
Screw Fish Dog Flies, they are now Salmon Crack!

Dave-I wondered what you were getting yourself into :tdo12: , but just think how many flies you may be able to sell if they catch fish in a big money tournement like the St. Joe League :p :woohoo1:
Good thinking Steve...maybe add a flash of red into a couple as well ;) ;)

Hey Mark...
Is that kinda the feeling you got when you brought up the idea of starting a league in St Joe?
Everyone might want to what where you sit, the dog just dropped a load!
Darrin you are competely correct! there is nothing more desired than a win in the Michigan-Sportsman.com St Joseph League!!
When you get invited to fish here...you've made the big time!!

I have been searching all the weather stations and been on the phone this morning. looks like Sat may be little bumpy. the winds are going to shift to the SE by mid day, but it is going to start out a little wet in the am, rain ending by 7:30m, winds may be a little strong in the morning at 2-4, but will subside in the mid afternoon as the wind shifts. We fished in worse conditions at the first outing. I suspect that the lake will be every bit of 2-3 foot in the am, and by noon the lake will go 1 foot or less. the best report will come out tomorrow. My metoroligist in Chicago is to give me a call tomorrow Morn with his best update.

By the way, last min boats are welcome, we just need to know as soon as you know. either post it here and Steve A. will catch it or give me a call at 269-208-9868 if its after 5pm. I would really need to know as I need the head count for the cookout at the farm.
going to be another great event and one that you kick yourself (again) if you miss it.

That's funny Darrin. "NOT" :smile-mad
I'm still waiting for the estimate from Wolfs'. It seem like smokercraft change the design of the console after my boat was made and they're tring to find one in my style. I'm guessing that means it is going to cost me big money.

Mark,
My boat is full, maybe. Depends if the wife wants to battle out 4 foot waves in the am with rain. I'll be for sure with two of us and 3 if she goes. Not sure on the weigh in...I'll post tomorrow before noon on a final count....but count me for 1 for sure. :dizzy:
I sure hope the wind dies down sooner than noon on saturday or it'll make for a bumpy ride back in...and we all know STEVE DOESN"T NEED THAT!!!!! If it is bumpy, just make sure you're not the boat right behind Steve, or you may have to dodge pieces and parts flying out/off the boat! lol Just kidding steve...hope it's all okay by the tourney. :D

the forcast gets better with each passing hour.....
FRIDAY NIGHT...NORTH WINDS 5 TO 10 KNOTS. CHANCE OF SHOWERS IN THE
EVENING. WAVES 2 TO 4 FEET.
.SATURDAY...NORTH WINDS 5 TO 10 KNOTS. PARTLY SUNNY. WAVES 2 TO 4
FEET SUBSIDING TO 1 TO 3 FEET LATE IN THE AFTERNOON.
I will do another update in the am but right now I am thinking that no one should have any problems for Sat.
Oliver, when you get in Steves boat, you might want to have a kidney belt on. Last time I was sore for 4 days from all the "Hang Time" in the air. And just remember, stuff breaks, it happends to all of us, Just more so to Steve....
When the console broke and the steering wheel landed on the floor at 35mph in 3 footers, now that's the time to start getting worried.. a few tips----
Get a good grip, sit down, shut up and hold on!!! Oh and don't let him have a beer, Not one....Oh my gosh you ought to see what he does then with his boat after one beer!...Not a pretty sight. Its at that time you really get worried....

Thanks for the advice adjusted. I'll call the chiropractor and get an appointment for first thing Monday morning.
I didn't mean any disrespect about the boat comming apart. I just have visions of the seat (with me attached) being catapulted into water like a bad James Bond movie. :yikes:

Adjusted 3,
I sure like to fish this tournament but so far I have no crew and it cost me $50.00 to go down there for gas. So I do not know what I can do. They told me that we don't have to work this Saturday. I will let you know by tomarrow.

It looks like we may have one person, although a rookie, that could join you Saturday morning. If you're interested, he was going to fish on another boat, but we could move him to yours. I may not be able to fill out your boat with three people, but I can definitely place at least on on your boat. They may not be a pro on the riggers, but the heart's in the right place. Let me know.

Guys I'm not going to be able to make it after all. I just found out that my car is leaking oil pretty bad so I'll have to get that taken care of tomorrow. I was going to ride with Rat City Hooker so could one of you guys let him know that I had to cancel? I'll PM him too. Thanks guys and wish my car luck.
