Got the boat 2 days ago just found out the year of the boat and motor today. Not sure if motor runs yet or not, have to rewire and things like that. Needs some external parts for the choke. If it does run I'll try to find parts to fix it. But if it doesn't run should I put effort into fixing it or just get a a motor that runs? I also like to know if anyone knows where to look around at for parts for this year of engine.

Thanks,
Jim

I can find parts for that puppy,, you need to see just how good of health she is in,compression, lower unit ect...
If she has a million hours on her the forward gear and clutch dog may be suspect,,so if you can get her to run(make sure she is pumping water) and just take a quick run to make sure she don't pop out of gear on ya,,,,after that fresh lube in the lower unit, new impeller for the water pump, and what ever parts you need to make her complete.
those can be some very sweet running motors if all is good..
If I had a little more info about the motor I could give you better advice,,,like if it has sat for many years you probably will have to go through the carb just to make her run,,,also if it has sat for a long time the impeller is probably dry-rotted badly so if she starts and pumps water,,go ahead and take a short run,,but keep it very short just put a good load on that forward gear to make sure she stays hooked up and that's all ,,,
if you can post the model number and let me know what parts she needs I can probably point you to your parts
So give her a good once over and let us know just what kind of shape she is in!

thanks Tonga,

I have very slim idea of what we need, and condition of some of the components for the engine. The engine is free, and there is compression. Need all external parts for the choke and velves for the choke, and can easily turn propellar by hand. Also could use front control panel on carb. Carb looks good, need all new hoses for engine. Looks like it needs all components for the electric starter. All wires from engine need to be hooked up. Need new steering cable, could I get that from a home improvement store? I'm not sure how long she's been sitting but I know it's been a long time since it has seen water.I can look at more of the other parts tomorrow and let you know what I find. Model# is RDS-22.
Like to find a manual to look at to see exactly where everythings at. I can try to get a pic of boat&motor tomorrow.

Thanks alot,
Jim

Jim,

a manual for that motor should be no problem. A couple of years ago I bought a set of manuals for my '61 Evinrude. They were very reasonable and a big help to me. You can get them through Ken Cook. Here's their web address :

Ken Cook outboard manuals (http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/)

Good luck !

Thanks for the info and help guys. A friend of mine talked to someone he knows and he's friend has a 25-35 hp evinrude that runs, and I'm thinking about buying it so I won't have to play around with the johnson. it's a little bit of a down grade but this motor should push 14' alumuinum boat around pretty well. also give me a chance to buy a trolling motor.

Slim Jim what are you going to do with the old 40HP?

Looked at the evanrude yesterday, and it's definintly older than the johnson. Could consider it a antique motor. I'm going to try to get the johnson to run. Just need ignition for the starter and hoses yet, and find which wires go where.Hopefully it will run without carb generator. Found place that has generator and plate for carb but expensive. Hope to find an engine for parts or one that is a little newer and runs at an auction next saturday. Tore the engine apart more today and looked at water pump, gears and shafts and nothing is rusted and is in good condition.
