I've got a small bass baby boat. It's one of those foam filled plastic deals. I'm really happy with it because it's perfect. I borrowed my bosses 3 horse motor and I really want a motor of my own. The boat has a 3 hp rating. Is there a problem putting a 4 or 5 hp motor on it? Am I going to do something really stupid?

I have a 10' Pond Prowler that is rated for up to 5 hp. My kicker for my 16' is a 6 hp. I would have no problem hanging that 6 on my Pond Prowler. I just wouldn't push it wide open. I don't think you'd have a problem hanging a 4 on it but I'd be a little careful with a 5. I'd say if you do have a 4, just be sensible and don't go nuts with it and you'd be ok.

I think the rating is there for your safety. You would'nt want to put a motor so heavy it would sink. Or too much torque and rip the back end off. Or way to fast so you had little or no control. If the rating is 3 stay close to that. What abt. the game warden? I think with good judgement a 4 would be ok? Not sure abt. 5?

It is not illegal (State law) to install a motor with more HP than the hull rating. There may be saftey and warranty issues.
