Protesters blast law restricting licenses for many immigrants
As the daughter of undocumented immigrants, Gloria Verduzco is suspicious about the state government's new effort to collect Social Security numbers from drivers.
So, Verduzco, 20, was among three dozen people who demonstrated at the Secretary of State's downtown Grand Rapids branch Monday.
Verduzco said she was not happy when Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, recently dropped a rule that would have required undocumented immigrants to produce Social Security numbers to obtain a driver's license.
Instead, starting May 1, undocumented immigrants have to certify -- sign under oath -- that they don't have Social Security numbers.
"By doing that, you put yourself in danger of being deported," said Verduzco, a Grand Rapids member of the Michigan Organizing Project, a statewide political advocacy group that is active in Hispanic issues.
