Petition drive to ban gay marriage launched
Campaign faces tight deadline
Backers of the proposal to define marriage in the state Constitution are giving up on the Legislature and mounting an eleventh-hour petition drive.
To qualify for the fall ballot, the group Citizens for the Protection of Marriage would need to collect 317,757 signatures from registered voters within just a few months. Although the deadlines are not fixed, because of requirements for review of signatures and the lead time needed to print ballots for overseas voters, the signatures would have to be turned in by mid-July.
The proposed amendment would add to the Constitution the sentence: "To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children, the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose."
