I have a few questions on some jigging techniques: I have started using a barrel swivel about 5 feet up from my jig to prevent the line from twisting. I was wondering if anyone else does this, or if there is something to be done to prevent the line twist from occuring. I use 6 pound test flourocarbon and I just bought a spool of fireline yesterday to give it a try. Will be going out to fighting island thursday evening. Any ideas would be great, Thanks.

That is the same way I set up, Fireline, barrel swivel and florocarbon leader and as light a jig as I can while staying vertical and still feeling the bottom. That should work just fine. Good luck! :)

I would, but I would be losing alot of swivels. I already lose enough jigs as it is. I no longer jig unless the people have a bow mount.

I use this setup, 8# yellow fireline with a barrel swivel and 12# Green XT leader (helps your chances with the muskies and does not bother the walleyes).
If you are getting a ton of twist, you need a swivel. Also, you might be jigging too aggressively and your jig may be spinning. Or your tail might be on crooked, which could also cause it to spin.

Thanks guys, I just went to the wyandotte boat ramp website wbramp.com and saw a picture of a girl with her first walleye. I was fishing about 40 ft from her when she caught it in front of the steel plant. She was screaming and yelling, it was nice to see, although I fished for about 5 hours with nothing to show.
I have read about 100 different articles on jigging and how I do it is to let it hit bottom, lift up about 6 inches, pause and lower it again making sure there is no slack. It feels right but I am not catching a single thing. 3 trips and no fish, but I keep trying. I use 3/8-5/8 jig heads with a 3 inch tail and minnow w/a stinger. What am I doing wrong. I have great boat control but I just can't seem to find any biters.

Even expirenced jiggers have a stuggle this time of year. We havent had any weather that turns them on fast and furiess sp. and there is alot more pressure than it use to be. Still no excuses, change up color, try bigger jigs, brown rubber worms, steve at wyandotte will turn you on to them. thats all I use when I jig (no bait) thats cheatin. Another comment about your set-up is when you get snagged it breaks off the jig, instead of breaking your pole, that Fire line is tough sh**:p Good luck to you and keep it in the water.

Has any one ever ran a three way swivel up a few feet from the jighead and then run another line off the swivel while jigging. Just a ????? and a thought! :)

Seems to me that a 3-way above a jig is asking for a tangled mess to deal with !

Always Fishing:
Maybe you need to change your name to Always Catching. It sounds like you are doing things properly, however, you are not getting the results. Sometimes it can be something very subtle that you are doing wrong that can make all the difference.
My advice would be to try a guide once to get the details and get some confidence in your methods and spots. Here is a link to the best on the river:
