LANSING -- The slight advantage among Michigan voters enjoyed by Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry after his triumph in the state's Feb. 7 caucuses has all but disappeared, a new poll shows.
U.S. Sen. Kerry, D-Mass., led President George W. Bush by a single percentage point, 44 percent to 43 percent, in the poll by EPIC/MRA of Lansing. Independent candidate Ralph Nader, who may not appear on the Michigan ballot, garnered 3 percent, with 9 percent undecided.
In an EPIC/MRA poll conducted Feb. 22-25, Kerry led Bush 49 percent to 45 percent. That poll did not include Nader.
The most recent poll of 600 likely voters was conducted by telephone March 28 through April 1. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.
The Michigan results mirror to some degree Kerry's recent slippage in other national and regional polls published in the last week.
The poll also showed Bush's job approval ratings have improved slightly: half of Michiganders have a favorable impression, compared to 48 percent with an unfavorable impression.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm's job approval numbers remained strong -- and well ahead of Bush -- at 62 percent favorable versus 35 percent unfavorable.
The poll also sought to measure support for the affirmative action ballot proposal to ban race and gender preferences in government hiring and contracting and university admissions. Sixty-four percent of those surveyed said they planned to vote for the proposal, or were leaning toward a "yes" vote. Twenty-two percent said they planned to oppose or leaned "no," with 14 percent undecided.
Whether voters will actually cast ballots on the affirmative action question, though, remains uncertain. Its backers need to survive concerted legal challenges and collect more than 300,000 petition signatures to put it before voters in November.
