Just curious what people think about eating walleyes/perch. Do you think they taste better out of cold water or ice than out of warmer water? Haven't noticed a whole lotta difference but have heard of people that won't even keep them once water reaches certain temperature. If anything I think the perch taste better when icefishing. I usually put fish on ice immediately when fishing summer/ winter but i'm sure if you keep them alive it wouldn't matter.

Perch and walleye are the same winter and summer. In summer they should go form water to ice. If on ice for any amount of time, the cooler drain plug should be pulled and cooler tilted to drain water. Now Pike. Better from cold water.

My summer fish go immediately on ice. I can't tell any difference, summer or winter.

i'd like to know why you say that too ed?
I've never really noticed the difference other than the flesh is firmer out of the fish off the ice than from summer fish (if filleted right away), but once you put them in ice water to wash the fillets, they all turn white and firm up. seem the same to me at that point.

I drain the water as well, I think that they stay a little colder and its keeps the from laying in their own death slime. Not sure if it really works that well, but I am not going to change anything that was passed down to me from my dad. I also started bleeding them last year after 1fife showed me the way and that seems to help in cleaning along with the taste as well.

I feel if the fish are dead and sitting in water, after time the flesh absorbs a small amount of the the water which inturn makes the meat less firm. I'm not sure if this has been proven but it works for me and most of my friends that fish.

I've never noticed a diference between summer and winter fish either, like the alot of the others, my fish go directly into the cooler.
I also try to keep the water in the cooler down to a minimum.

All fish can be bled. Just pull or cut a gill open and the blood will flow/squirt out. I bleed 'em in the live well or on ice in the cooler on the ride home.
I agree that it makes for a much better product and cuts way down on the bloody mess when cleaning the fish.

DO you cut the bottom of the fish head where the gills come together or actually cut the gill off, please elaborate. I thought I knew everything about cleaning fish. Not!!!!!!:p

MUSHY, I just take my knife and cut the gills towards the back side on the bottom. It works really well when cleaning time arrives, a lot less mess to deal with. I do put them in the live well for about 5 minutes to empty them out before they go in the cooler.

a while ago i saw a program, maybe 48hours, or something that did a show on coolers. i thought they said to leave the water in the cooler. something like it helps keep the ice and cooler colder. less area for air. not sure. i always leave all the water in the cooler till it is time to carry it.;) to each there own:)
