O'k I went to Lakeside and was looking to buy some Pencil Plugs. My challenge was to know what is Wonderbread, Clown, Vampire, etc. that you folks say are good ones to use. The challenge was there is no color markings on them. So my question for you pencil pluiggers is, "Is there a chart or something showing them, or is there an internet site I can go on?" Thanx for all your help!! :)

The paint patterns for the Pencil Plugs are sometimes copied from the color chart for Rapalas. Searching their website should help you identfy some other patterns.

this is a very general tendancy I have when selecting colors...
first I get a light, medium and dark....then one highly reflective like a chrome/black or chrome/blue......after that I may or may not add a couple that look natural.....like scale patterns in green and white, or brown/silver

BPS is Bass Pro Shop........I missed the sale but I already got all the colors anyway. The ones you described work great for me too.
;)
One personal favorite that was excellent last spring for me was pink head chrome body black dots or the black ladder back but usually both at the same time on different leaders. Gotta love it when you get double headers man. :D

I think fishless of PH is a bit upset on the price he got on a river rod combo he bought from there.he found the same combo at a couple of other places for much cheaper.
I have nothing against the store myself.I think probait has a great selection of tackle to be found anywhere and the people who run it are friendly and helpful, but there are other places around with cheaper prices on the same products.

they might be cheaper but buy live bait at there store at 7:00 am
if people dont spend a couple bucks extra on certain items they wont have a real bait shop to shop at.
Its almost like factorys moving to mexico if everone bought there archery equipment at walmart the real shops would close up ,ever have walmart setup a bow I had one set up at gander mountain for My son and they made a pigs a#$ out of it had to give me a new bow I finally took it to thompsons bait on water street they did a great job I will never by sporting goods from a franchise again just my opinion

And my opinon as well "awfulpotent" !!!
Just this past winter ice fishing I hit all the bait shops around and found different prices on lots of stuff. I also found out that there really is 12 minnows in a dozen at most places. I choose to buy from the guy that gives you a "scoop" instead of a "dozen" for the same price. Yes I may have paid a few cents more on hooks, jigs and lures but I also have a very good customer relationship with the owner and employees there. When it comes to service there as well it's unmatched as far as I'm concerned. I'm just speaking of a shop in Chesterfield Twp. Just to say that sometimes cheaper isn't always necessarily better. Good luck fishin' guys !! See ya's out there. ;)

Hey Guys,
My statement is my own opinion, I don't have a problem with a person trying to make a living. But to charge $15.00 more for a reel, that I was told had steel gears in it and to find out that it has plastic gears. I must note that this is the first time that I ever had a problem with Pro Bait. So this is my opinion I am sorry if I PO anybody. That was not my intension.

03-23-2004, 07:57 AM
Not to argue but to disagree,I agree with fishless of ph.You can buy the same(pen 209) reel in town at other places $49.95.The $60 that probait sells them for is a bit much.
I guess the moral of this story is to shop around and dont get all your eggs out of one basket.Leave a few for the Easter bunny to pass around LMAO:D :D :D

Now thats a little better than cutting the guy off at the legs it's a buyers market and we have many chooses.
And I'm not pissed just a little shocked about ya flying off the handle with no explanation, but I get your point now.

I just found out that two of my plug box's were stole from my shed with 340 plugs. I doubt I will replace them all, I only use about 6 colors the hot one for me last year were easter egg. I had an orange and brown pearl painted by Randy Helin that has always been one of my hotest. Now I have to go try to get him to do a few for me.
Boy this sucks. if any one comes across two home made wooden pencil plug boxes for sale please let me know. they are cedar and hold 160 each.

Fishless,
If I am not mistaken Scott told me you called the store and wanted to return the reel. He told you that he would take it back no problem. The big chain stores buy their reels a couple hundred at a crack so they can afford to sell them cheaper than Pro Bait, Thompsons or any of the little guys. also sometimes they sell a cheaper quality reel that usually comes combo'ed up. we try to offset the price difference by spooling the combos for free and providing accurate fishing information. ask the 16year old girl at the counter at the big chain store what color Bomber the salmon are hitting on or where the steelhead are being caught!!!!
anybody ever has a gripe with the service at this store feel free to let me know, and we will rectify the situation.

Deputy.
Heres a picture of a pencil plug in action on the St.Claire. I have a full color chart of all the Night Stalker Brand Plugs around here someplace. If I can find it, I'll post that as well. The killer plug for us last year was the Black Head/White Scale.

Wulp,
I tore my whole PC desk apart looking for the original copy of the chart. Then thought I had saved it on the PC. Finally found a second hand scan that I took off the original and re-scanned that. So the quality won't be that great. But it gives you something to go on. I ordered all my Nite Stalkers through Lakeside Tackle. The one I got circled was the hot potato last spring.

Thanks again very helpful

THANX, to Walleye Express for posting the color chart for Nite Stalker pencil plugs. Now the ral challenge comes to the users of the infamous pencil plugs. A challenge to all you folks to post the names used for the ones you know. There are twenty rows of four and one by itself. If you post put down row number 2-20 and begin from left to right (1 being far left and 5 being far right). Lets see how many names or titles we can get for this vast assortment. Good fishing!! :o :)

I'm guessing row 8, plug #4 is frog. After that I simply went by what looked good. :o
I do believe I actually had all the names to go along with the color chart at one time when I first became a Whipper-Snapper. But have never lost any plugs to either the bottom of the fish yet (knock on wood) so forgot where I put the darn chart. :D
