Just ask The Whale.....That is my same reply.....but in the river i always start with EDDYS and throw out a jig and tail.....Dude it depends on where you are fishing.....For me I have to see where the heck you are fishing in order to give you an answer....OTherwise you are going to get a novel of answers...and brother I wont be writing my novel for another 20 years...Fish on!
PS give me a situation and I may give you a few tips in those conditions...I got plenty of tricks up the sleave

its a dam area. the water is high the current is medium, the water is clear, u can wade about anywhere u want to so getting to the fish isnt a problem. spring time fishing. i hope someone has a good game plan for me lol. thanks for the help guys

Dont throw out cranks. Start with your basic chartrues or orange jig heads....determine the best weight to use by how fast the current is taking the lure downstream,,,,then change your tails every 15 or 20 casts and see what works.....Depending on the color of the water use colors that are appropriate...if the water is stained and the sun is out try dark colors....this creates greater shadows of bait fish....If the conditions are clear you might want to have a better looking bait that looks like a minnow....Fish aren't dumb when there is clear water they know what they want.....
At a dam I like to find the slack water, read the color of the water...is there any dabree in the water...are there bait fish...what are they.... Lastely find the calmest water next to the greatest flowing water....why because fish dont like to swim all the time.....DO YOU LIKE TO WORK ALL THE TIME OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO JUST SIT ON THE COUCH AND WAIT FOR YOUR NEXT MEAL TO BE DELIVERED TO YOU?

try this rig....good for presenting live bait in a really slow pace.
Thread a 1/4 oz drift sinker (pencil sinker or no-snag) on your main line, then put a bead on the line for a buffer. Tie on a snap or barrel swivel. Now tie a leader from florocarbon and thread a corkie on the line. chartruese corkie has been good for me. Then tie on a nice sharp 12 or 10 hook. Add a leech and you have instant snack for anything that swims. Experiment with leader lengths....18-24 inches to start with. Toss it out and just twitch it back or lift/drop. this is exactly what I use when fishing a dam near my house for eyes.
