Since I'm new to this forum, and just made a comment on the affirmative action (actually "race preferences") topic, I'd like to introduce myself.

I was born in Muskegon to two working class parents. When my parents separated at my age of 10, I moved to Holton (20 miles northeast of Muskegon, near Fremont), where I later graduated from high school. I learned to hunt (mostly small game with dogs, some big game, near Baldwin) and fish (mostly big lake trolling, some stream). I have to admit that I haven't gotten back home as much as I'd like to; and as a freelance writer with a photography interest I'm now as likely to take a camera alongside as I would a bow. There's just not as many outdoor opportunities over here on the southeast side of the state; although I know there are some good areas as well.

I went to U-Michigan in 89-93, where I did investigative writing for a bi-weekly student paper; and since then I've maintained some unusual "contacts" that have lead to winning two FOIA lawsuits against U-M, several publications, and most recently in May 2003, a Wall St. Journal op-ed expose demonstrating that a U-Mich. "scientist" in psychology concealed from the Supreme Court a report written by her husband that contradicted her expert testimony in 1999 claiming "diversity has educational benefits". That piece unfortunately came after the Court heard arguments and after it had closed its time for briefs. Since the June decision, I've been volunteering; and now working full time, for the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative; trying to gather enough petitions to eliminate race preferences from affirmative action.

For more details, see the affirmative action topic post or our website at http://www.mcri2004.org. We feel that "race preferences" are an inappropriate TYPE of "affirmative action," although the language would not affect socio-economic programs that benefit all individuals, "outreach programs" that increase the size of the pool of competing applicants, or real improvement in K-12 education. We feel that race preferences cover up these real, better solutions; with a gloss that makes us appear more "diverse," but isn't in actuality more diverse.

We'd appreciate any assistance you can offer. Feel free to contact me at chetly@mcri2004.org

Thanks.
I'll try to stay on topic as much as possible.

My job is about "hunting" for signatures; but I'm sure that after we get on the ballot I'll take advantage of at least a couple summer opportunities to boat on Croton Dam or the Big Lake with some old friends; do a little fishing; etc. Then I'll be able to tell the infamous tales about the big ones that got away.

Is there an "events" listing on this website somewhere?

Chet,
Welcome to the finest Michigan focused outdoor site on the 'net. There are a few others who do some freelance writing, including myself, and who are regulars on these boards.

Welcome Chet, I'm sure you'll enjoy this site. Like Whit and yourself, I too am a freelance writer- unfortunately for me though, no one wants to read the crap I write [LOL]. So instead I go pound nails everyday :D Jody
