I see they recommend pencil plugs and Rapala's for spring fishing using handlines. I have been looking at pencil plugs and everywhere you go they are different prices. Any one on the place where they are the least expensive and any hints on which ones to use. there are so many colorsto choose from. Appreciate your help :)

I don't have to much luck with pencils during the day, but sure whale on em pretty hard at night. Now raps on the other hand are my bread and butter, so to speak and I'm sure a lot of the others like the raps as well.;) all colors and all sizes......come on spring........

I rarely use pencil plugs. When I do somthing with orange, yellow, chrome work the best.
Like eyebuster, I use Rapalas alot. 99% of my fish come on clown, natural, or firetiger. Those seem to be my favorite colors and the ones that always find there way on to my leaders :D

I tend to agree also. I had all my pencil plugs stolen years ago and I never really replaced them. The Rapalas have worked quite well at night and in stained water in daylight.

I had better luck with firetiger raps or bomber long a's than with pencil plugs whipping in the SCR.

Last spring my best nights on plugs were in June and the colors last year that murdered them were pink/chrome , green head pearl body pink tail , pink or orange back pearl body black dots , green back pearl body pink belly black dots , black back chrome sides and belly , black back gold-chrome sides and belly. By far last year the vampire rapala #11 and #13 were the most productive day or night. This color is black back chrome sides and belly with a red lip. I've been using those nightstalker plastic plugs which seem to have a slightly different action then my wood plugs do but for me they all produce at different times. Good luck out there. ;)

Dave, haven't done it for a few years. While getting older have a hard time staying up that late at nite. Used to fish till midnight up to 2 am. Might give it a shot the summer(May-June) Know a spot in Marine city that is good. Only problem would be getting there early for a good spot. But I'll let you know.
Seems like that method would work in the Downriver area too. Not too much different than handlining other than your anchored.

Hi guys.I fish detroit river from mid march till end of april then switch to SCR.When i am on the DTR i mainly hand line most of the time i piggy back one if not both of my leads.you have to run pencils in front because if you piggy back raps the front one seems to loose its action.I would say the catch % is about50% on raps 25% on pencils and 25% on jigs this way you only have 2 leads but 3 or 4 lures. Now we switch to SCRwhere 90% of the time i whip the other 10% handlining when i can't get into one of the whipping holes. When whipping most of the guys piggy back 2 pencils then the rap.so i am running 2 pencils for 1 rap. catch% i would say about 50/50.when i catch a fish on a lure try to match the other 2 to it.Colors well i am really attached to those hand painted raps some nights whipping that is all that will work but all the original colors also do good just all on different nights. My stand buys are the clown always steady red head wonderbread blue head wonderbread and red head chartruse body black ladderback.pencils all of they above plus black head wonderbread/blue head blue back with white or silver scales on sides and any of your pinks.types i think they all work good but night stalkers are plastic paint never comes off the rest are wood and after a season or two paint seem too peel on some of them.

Sorry that post so long hard to explain all of it on here.Mike named the spot most all of my whiipping is done around marine city 5 or6good holes.why i like whipping better once anchored don't have to watch where your going plus no motor running all the time.some of the holes get crowded but that is only 4 or 5 boats not like DTR where some nights there will be 40 or 50 boats aroud you.don't use much fuel either most holes within 2 or 3 miles from launch.Whipping is 95% night time fishing. Hope this help you guys out some.If any questions e mail me at mrwalleyewarrior@aol.com
