I read in a thread about premaking leaders for walleye fishing with handlines. My question pertains to the leader. The thread said to make leads and put a swivel on one end and a snap on the other end. Is the snap the end part of a swivel that you can buy seperate. Secondly which end goes on to the lure and which one on the shank. Thanx for your help
Can't wait to try this handlining business. :)

You are going to need snap swivels at both ends of your leader (one at the shank and one at the bait) unless you like to tie the lure directly to the leader . Just make sure not to buy the cheap ones. Any good coast lock snap swivel should be fine. Terminal Tackle, Cabelas, Bass Pro are all good. Try to stay small, 25 lb. proof strength is more than adequate. Good luck! :)

Now that I reread your post, a snap would be fine at the bait as long as it is a body bait (I call them dead snaps but not sure if that is the proper term). Anything that spins will need a snap swivel or barrel swivel and dead snap. I would like to word this post better but I have to take my son to hockey, we're late! Good luck.

I run the snap-swivel from the shank and the pin (or the snap part) goes to the bait. I use them with both spoons and rapalas. I took some old schooley ice fishing reels and mounted them to a board and "reel" them in when I tie them. I like that better than wrapping them around something, but that is just me. At the end of the day if you want to reuse them they reel up nice and easy. I always throw them out at the end of the day taking the pin and snap-swivel to tie them on another lead. The cheap line gets to stretched out to save it.

I use a snap with a swivel at the shank end then cut the swivel off the same size snap swivel and tie just the snap to my lure end all I have ever used for handlining is the generic brass swivels and never have had a problem with them or the line tangleing as long as you use good leader material such as mason
