This morning I posted a different thread stating how on the DNR website the new fishing licenses that went onsale had a listed expiration date of 3/31/2004. Another member posted that when the licenses actually print out they do in fact expire in 2005.

Anyhow...

I was at Meijer at lunchtime today and I figured I'd just buy my license in person. When the clerk printed it out it said it expired March 31, 2004! The teenage clerk tried telling me that if I DNR guy saw it he would see the yellow backing and wouldn't worry about the date. Uh huh. I wonder how many times he's had interaction with the DNR. Yeah, you might be able to talk your way out of trouble, but why go through the hassle. So the kid called other Meijer stores and they're reporting the same issue.

So make sure you check the date when you get your license from wherever...

This is why I just wait for the end of the month. I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, and told myself that I will just wait. I usually get mine the last week of this month.

Buy it online.

Then save the file that you print for your lisence and print multiple coppies for yourself. I do this then put a copy in my wallet, tackle box, boat, trucks, vest etc and I can never forget my lisence. I love this system, works for me.

That is a nice feature of the online purchase. But printing multiple copies is only truly useful if you also have multiple copies of your driver's license since you're required to show the I.D. you used to purchase your fishing license upon request from a C.O. And since you probably always keep your driver's license in your wallet, might as well just stick the fishing license in there too. :)

I,bought mine March1st,in 2001,at Miejers. It had the right dates on it,but they hadn't changed the tape yet.
Wouldn't you know that is the one of the few times I got checked, that fall fishing pike. The CO,thought he had me till he run it on the computer and it came up valid.
I,went back that afternoon, and made them put it on the right color tape.I,wait till the end of March now.I,hate being hassled when I'm catching fish.

I also print multiple copies so that I have one in my wallet, one in the boat ect... This way, if I should lose my wallet, I still have the fishing license, no need to replace that, just everything else.

Whilethe CO will ask for your drivers lic for proof of ID, and rightfully so, forgetting that card is probably safer than forgetting the fishing lic...at least I would think so...

Incidentally, looks like they finally got their act together. When I was buying groceries today at Meijer I decided to give them another shot. This time it had the right date on there...

Meijer, Wal-Mart, Kmart, it doesnt matter where you go, they all have the same machines hooked up to the same DNR database. That is weird about the date though.

With your driver's license or ID the CO can run a check through the DNR's Retail Sales System to see what hunting and fishing licenses you have purchased. There is a chance the system may be down, so it's a good idea (and the law) to have your license with you. A lot of the problems lately are related to the system relocating from Lansing to Plano. This is suppose to make the system more reliable and may, someday, give us the ability to have paper-less licenses.

The multiple copies is also good in case you wash your wallet - the driver's license will survive - the printed out fishing license will not. I "laminated" mine with clear packing tape, after getting washed, all I had was the packing tape with some marginally legible print on it. Got checked by a CO last weekend, even though the important stuff like my name, the expiration and type of license was readable, he still called it in..but was nice about it.

that happened last year also, the problem is on the DNR's end, they're program printed out the incorrect date, but since the paper has changed, you shouldn't have any problems.
