I got to take a good look at LSC today and we have a lot of NEW open water. And the geese and ducks are moving back in if you wan to see a bunch of cans go down to the end of the point at metro. But with all that rain all it did was freeze back up, so there is a lot of ice left. I think that the reason for most of the open water was from the drains. I also saw the ice cutter working her way across the lake.

What's the deal with the Ice-breaker? Shipping season is closed. So why would they be out there?

channel 7 pays them to do that to make open water for the ice flows to go out so they can make us look bad on the news.....

The C.G. used one up here in sag.bay for a training opp. Why cant they just cut a hole in the ice and train that way? Those boats should be inside for maintanence during the winter. M.

I live on the north channel near the Harsens Island ferry. The C.G. has had to bring a cutter up to cut up the channel twice this year so the ferry could operate. The first time it happened the ferry owners said the cutter had to come from Toledo. So that would mean it had to go through the lake.

I think they keep the ice open for frieghters all season and they open the north channel for Harsens Island . I know that the cutting tug runs coal in to essexville all winter thats why we have open water and they want us to pay if we get stranded but they never talk about the island paying or the frieghters its not news if they are just doing a job that cost the tax payers millions each year

From my understanding the freighters are not moving but the barges move all year long if the can. By the way I also saw a small freighter crossing also.

I've heard of a couple boats working LSC...

The tug Manitou is working from Windsor and moving up to lower Lake St. Clair to take water samples. The water samples are being tested for chemicals after last week's chemical spill in the St. Clair River. The samples are taken above the Detroit River where there are a number of city water intakes that are used to provide drinking water for much of the region.

Friday the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Samuel Risley was working in the lower St. Clair River. The tugs Salvor and Tony Mackay pushing the barge KTC 115 upbound at the entrance of the St. Clair Cut became stuck in heavy ice. With the combined power of both tugs pushing on the barge it wouldn’t move.
A call for assistance was radioed. Responding was the Risley. Upon arrival the Risley passed the convoy then backed to the bow of the barge. Using her strong propeller wash the Risley had the ice moved and the convoy was on there way with one attempt. The Risley then lead tug and barge convoy to open waters north of Harsens Island.
Here's a pic taken last week by the Firecracker:
