I have been thinking about the portable deer blinds you can buy. Has anyone tried to use these as a shanty? Is there a good way to tie them down from the wind?

Saw a guy using one the other day, and I have given it some thought too. I have a DogHouse blind. The thing is very light and would be much easier to tote through the snow than my 65 pound MinuteMan III.

Anyway, the guy using the blind brought along what looked like a horse blanket that he drapped over the top of the blind. I was guessing that it was to give it some weight and hold it down in a mild wind.

I have wondered if the stakes could be driven into the ice. Any idea?

i use my portable hunting blind as a shanty. little congested but does fit two people with up to four holes. all it is is a 41/2 by 41/2 foot viking hut with aluminum poles and metal studs as a base. it is very easy to travel with however it is very light and difficult to control on windy days so i anchor it down with railroad tie weights or somethin

i only have a deer blind to fish with. this is our first year so i didn't want to spend a bunch of cash. i usually tie mine to my quad. but i also take the slush out of my holes & throw it in the corners. that will freeze to the ice & seal off the draft. then it will pull up pretty easy when done! it holds heat well. i'm guessing the blanket is to block out the sunlight that comes it. all in all, it is very easy to take out & bring back.

I saw a guy trying to put one up in the wind He was cussing out of his mind...I had a good view he was right in front of my shanty...I couldn't help but laugh and watch the guy struggle...after a few minutes of almost wetting myself...I got out helped him and said it would be a good idea...It seems to me it would work though...
I suggested to him, to use ancors, and maybe design a portable floor....Don't see why it wouldn't work...

Saw a couple guys using them also, look like they would work good. I figured if using mine, I would be using my cordless for drilling holes, so why not take a socket, and about 4 lag bolts, then just put them in 4 corners;)

They make anchors that you put in a hole augered about 3-5" into the ice and expand out when cranked. Can't remember where I seen them right now.

All you need to hold them down is Pole Barn spikes.
Don't pound them all the way in, leave about 2" out so when they freeze in the ice and you want to get them out just tap them with a hammer then pull them out. Works good.

I have used mine quite a few times. Here's a thread I started awhile back.

Hope you find info here.

There's also a link for a picture of the blind at the end of the first page.
