I am one who will bash the bait shop who counts their minnows, but I am also one who will praise one for a great minnow count. I asked for 2 dozen minnows at Aco's Anglers and Archers in Chesterfield this morning and got closer to 10 dozen...Thank you if you read this; you'll be getting my business from now on...:)

I've been getting mine there for a couple years now....hes always been that good with his count. I also take my Diawa 47LC reels to him to rebuild the drags....he puts in washers and friction parts from a Penn drag system and they work much better, longer, and smoother. I've lost salmon due the jumpy drags on those reels with the factory drags...but none since he fixed them. He also is a factory authorized repair station for Cannon downriggers and a couple others.....glad to see hes finally getting his "due" thanks to this website

Mike and Tony are great guys. I've been doing business with them for a few years now. They are the only place that has all the walleye gear I need for river fishing, all the best ice-fishing gear, the best live bait and counts and they are the only place I've found between here and Iron Mountain in the U.P. that can tune my Mathews bow so precise that I shot a robinhood this past bow season. (Putting one arrow inside the back of another while target shooting). On top of it all they are very nice to deal with. They treat me and my friends not only as valued customers, but as friends too. At least for me that seems hard to find lately. Selfrige Bait lost me as a customer because of the way they treat people and they're prices are rediculous. Hats off the Anglers and Archers ! ! !

I was in there the other day and Mike the owner told his employee to give this customer a good count as he was not wanting to be catagorized as a Selfridge or Pro bait.
Nice Job Mike!

Hey guys,
This is a great web site. Just wanted to say that I enjoy every part of it.
This bait shop does give great minnow counts. The only complaint I have is that they are charging $20 more on Lazer augers than Lackside. I picked up a 5 inch the day before and was suprised to see how much Anglers was charging.

HEY WELCOME TO THE SITE STACKED !!! It's the best CaTcH around !! :D
I agree on the pricing. I shop around alot for best prices. I do understand that the small shops are competing with places like Bass Pro, Cabelas and Gander Mtn. but some prices are rediculous. I bought a St. Croix jiggin rod at Gander today on clearance for $19.97 and a black steel ice scoop for $3.99. At Anglers/Archers the same exact ice scoop was $11.99. WHOA !!
I'll buy the jigs and spoons and stuff there cuz they have the best selection and the best minnows/counts. But some stuff I have to go elsewhere.

as someone that worked in a small bait shop (well, not that small, but family owned and operated), admittedly its damn near impossible to compete with the megastores on most prices. The fact that they can buy in such bulk, and have a lower overhead per item (fixed costs and employee cost), this allows them to have a lower retail markup than local mom and pop places. The thing about the mega chains.... go and ask questions with the workers...... for the most part they are not very knowledgeable about their products, while most local stores are more than willing to share the info and have a lot of knowledge about everything in their store (heck, they ordered it, the money for the stuff comes out of their pocket, so they have to choose wisely on stock).
The small stores try to find a niche. Right now most of the time its live bait, as the chains for the most part won't bother with the upkeep needed to house it. Because of this the small places can get ya in the door, sell ya some live bait (and not make much from it most times), and hope that you buy something else (ever forget anything at home, etc.), where they will make enough profit to stay in business and then some.
Please everyone, buy what you can (live bait and small odds and ends) from the little guy, the big guys will still be there (I know some things you're gonna buy at the big places to save big money), and it sure is nice to be able to come in, have a coffee, and have a chat with the local little guy. I'm an official member of the "Pi$$ & Moan Club", when it comes to minnow counts. The bait shop right at the entrance to Metro used to be the best around, they charged 3 bucks a dozen, but thats all ya had to ask for, was a dozen. Most of the time, you couldn't see the bottom of the bucket. I stopped there today and I asked for a couple dozen,,, after I looked in the bucket, there was "maaaayybe" 2 dozen in there. The best counts I've seen lately, have been at the Bottom Line, in Gibraltar.
going to try on sunday, plan on taking my seven year old.
Could someone lget me directions to aco's.
we will be coming from Flint.
thanks,
Dave

Boy's let me tell you, Mike has forgotten more about fishing than most of us ever have looked up in books and videos. Twenty years ago Mike told me of a spot ( Hole) that has produced for twenty two years. If He or Tony take the time to say something about the fine art of fishing LISTEN, for you may learn something that you will enable you to get a edge over the next wannabe and become a real fisherman.
There are a few, and most will help you if you take the time to listen listen listen, Fishing can or let me call it Catching can come down to as little as a size of bait and not color or what brand of lure you ar using.
This website has given more insite than any ten guides. My personal catch has increased by 90%. All you need to do is put this information to the test using your needs, Lake Location and Specie to find the correct mix, Enjoy this Sport to it's fullest for each one of you has a nitch that could complete the combination for one of us to become number UNO and kick butt on the Wisc or Minn. boys

anglers and archers is realy the best shop iv ever been to! been goin there for the 3 winters iv lived here in chesterfield. ill tell ya... being a punk kid lookin the way i do... its hard to walk into a place nd get the treatment i do. mike and tony have always treated me like a person and not a punk kid. over the years, its been a pleasure going in there and seeing mike b4 a day on the water... i walk in the door and i get HEHEY BOSS! they truely are a great bunch there and the minow count... what minow count... u go in u ask for a scoop. a scoop is about 50 to 100, u never know cuz they dont care, they just fill ur bucket:D and the gear there is great. love that place! p.s. if ya see me there say hello. 20 year old kid w/ a huge beard and a few holes in his face.:D

I guess it just depends on who you get at Metro Party Shoppe. A 16-17 year old was there yesterday. I asked for a dozen and probably got 7 dozen...Posting this probably got this kid in trouble...:D

I agree Connor4501, it depends who is scooping at Metro Bait. I went there last week and asked for 1 dozen. There had to be 60-75 minnows in my bucket.

Metro is usually good with me, only once this year did I get a crappy minnow count from there.

can't agree more about selfridge bait. read a newspaper article about them recently how they are so friendly and so forth. every time iv'e been in there they seemed to be totally indeferent to me as a customer. seems whenever you ask them a question about anything your bothering them. i go there on occasion, but only out of necessity not as a satisfied customer.

Selfridge give an ok count , most the time. There service is So-So. if you ask a question and bad if you do ask a question.? Nuch help on fishing info or equipment info.
unfortunately did not have much luck with the perch. Went out of Gino's walked about .6 mile straight out (about 3/4 way to most of the pack of fisherman. Only had 4 fish.
Water was about 7 ft deep but it was cloudy. Nice day though

Sterling State Party store in monroe gives you good quality and quantity also. Ask for a doz. for wallaye and you get enough big ones and small ones for perch. We had enough for 3 outings on one purchase. Left them in the garage and didn't have many dead ones
