View Full Version : Fish with spike's!!What is it?

Went out fishing at yates and I caught a wierd fish. Description of fish
Spikes on head
Red and pink gills
green stripe going down the side
ugly looking scale's


Could this be a so called chinese steelhead.
One of my friend's said it was a cowfish
Im going to post this on the other forum's so everyone see's it because I really wanna know what this is.....Thanks

Sounds like about a 7" Emerald Shiner to me. They develop those fleshy protusions on thier heads when they are big, as for the stripe, the name is self explanatory.

It almost sounds like a fish I saw a few weeks ago. A kid that was fishing near me said that it was called a horned dace.

stelmon, it coulda been a chineese steelhead. Did it try to run into ya in the river. :) Actually them creek chubs and some of the daces get freaky colors to them when they are about to spawn.:D

Yea, sounds like river chubs we used to catch as a kid in the clinton. Are the spikes like small protrusions like pimples or the like on there nose and forehead area. Bigger the fish bigger the bumps. Used to catch them up to about 8-10in.

It's a horned dace i think. I do have a pic and no I didn't keep it. Another fisherman took it and I found it dead a little up river. Think the guy got spiked It was ashame but I dunno why he did what he did
