I am planning on taking my son out to Ginos on Saturday (2-21) and was just wondering is any of you more seasoned ice fisherman have any thoughts/predictions about the possible Ice conditions for this weekend. It is supposed to rain on Friday and the low temps are supposed to be above freezing both thursday and friday (with 40 deg highs) through Saturday. I know that there is allot of ice right now but I would just like any advise that you might have.

Thanks :)

Will have little or no effect. 14" of good solid ice. Put your mind at ease and go out and fish.

Thank's Mike, I figured that I was over thinking the whole situation but I wanted another opinion. I have been out there for the past couple of weekends but my son couldn't be there with me. This weekend will be different. He is looking forward to it (and so am I) :) I hope they are biting, he hasn't gotten to catch a fish through the ice yet but he still loves going out. My kind of kid... :D I would sure like to see him get a couple of those HOGS.

See you out there!
Mark

I agree with walleyemike, the warmer temps and a little rain won't bother the ice, it might smooth out the top some and make it real slick, make sure you wear your creepers.

It didn't freeze 12+ inches in a couple of days and it sure won't melt that much in a couple of days.....have a good time and good luck on the hogs.............:D

With highs in the low 40s for 3 days, but lows in the mid to upper 20s, some rain, and frozen precip, amy even have a snow sotrm sat if temps are lower. BUt, i bet about 1/8" of the ice will melt, not even...its the 50 degree weatehr, with warm rain that'll destroy it quick..

I don't know how young your son is but the only thing I'd be concerned about is him (and you) getting wet. There will probably be some water on top of the ice. Not much but enough if he is a little guy that he might slip and get wet. Get him some creepers for his boots to keep him upright and bring some extra clothes. Other than that have fun.:)

He is 11 and has been going out with me for the last couple of years (a couple times a season). We both have creapers and I have a canvas shanty (Clam) so we should be OK. He plays hockey so I will have him bring his pond skates. maybe he can pull the shanty out for the old man...:D

Thanks guys, I feel much more confident now.

Now, let me at those fish.....

I'm sure the area around Gino's will be fine

HOWEVER, just in the last 3 days, the entire Lower Lake has opened up. I haven't seen that in a month. The guys venturing out at 10,11 and 12 mile should keep an eye on the wind direction. Any strong off-shore/north wind may send you trolling

I would skip the skates, too many holes in that area that won't be frozen over. I'd hate to see an ankle or knee busted up.

I wouldn't worry about unsafe ice for a while, probably till April.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~><> AL:D

Sure... Now some others want to panic like I did earlier in the week... (see some of the other posts from tonight) I'll be there at 7:00am wind or no wind... rain or no rain... I am taking a couple of sandbags with me. That will help with the wind on the shanty and I will be careful of course. Safety first.

Anyway, the ice is thick and the fish are there...

Besides, I can go on Saturday but not Sunday.
The best time to fish is when you can fish.

Let me at em... :D
