I have recently aquired a older Jiffy model 30, 10" ice auger. It will start but it wont stay running. Also it is leaking gas from what I guess is the bowl on the carb. There is a square plate with 4 screws with what appears to be a gasket betwen the cover and the Carb bowl. The screws are tight. I assume this gasket needs to be replaced. Where can I get it? Can I get one at a auto store? Is this gas leak possibly cause the motor to die, because it is possibly getting air? Or what else? I cleaned up the plug and gapped it at .030. Is this the correct gap? I dont have a owners manual. Once you get it started you can pull the auger lever and it will run and appear to cut great but once you let it go it immeditly dies.

Thanks!!!!

Gas could be too rich as well. Just another possible cause. I would take it to a small engine shop and have them go over it and fix anything that might be wrong...it may save you a lot of time and hassle on the ice.

That is you Diaphram for the carberator...had to change mine a year ago after about 18yrs. of use...you can go to any Lawnmower or snowblower repair place and get the rebuild kit for the carb....it will include the Diaphram, and new needle jet.....when you take the 4 screws off you take the old rubber diaphram off and use a socket and take the needle valve off.....replace needle and rubber diaphram put screws back in you are all set!!.....There is also 2 screws side by side you will see on the side of the engine that your choke is on...If after your done it doesn't run to your liking... Low speed idle screw is on Left...High speed idle screw is on Right........you can start bytightening all the way in clockwise then turn each 1 1/8 turns...then adjust from there....those 2 screws are your only idle and running adjustments!!! Hope that helps you....the rebuild kit will cost you about $5.00-$8.00......Kevin D.

Could be as simple as split tubing also...

Remember to open the vent on the gas tank.

That was it the low idle screw. I adjusted it about 3/4 of a turn and she purrs llike a kitten. I took it out on the river for a test run and drilled about 7 or 8 holes with a little effort but with some new blades (these blades are in pretty bad shape) she should cut like a hot knife though butter! I was amazed that it even starts on the first pull now, but we will see how well it starts on a cold morning. But I dont have the other screw you are talking about. There is a hole for another screw but it is not even tapped.

Here is a picture.

Anyone want to take a guess what year this is? I have no idea.

This is a 3 hp auger? It is a 8 inch blade not 10 like I said earlier. What is the oil gas mixture to be used with Jiffy Augers?

Its kind of funny how I got this auger. My mom and her husband stop be last night, and we got talking about ice fishing. How its kind of suck because of the smaller fish in the Saginaw River. I said its becoming more work than fun because the ice is getting thicker and my hand auger blades are getting duller! My moms husband says well I bought a auger at a rummage sale over the summer. I was like man why didnt you tell me this at X-mas time! LOL! So I asked if I could borrow it!;) My moms husband doesnt even fish. He was gonna use it as a post hole digger. So I hope someday he dont want it back! But for now look out cause where Im fishing its gonna look like swiss cheese! LOL!!:D

I have the same auger. Mix is 24:1. My auger will not stay running without priming every hole drilled. Can this be solved with a simple carb kit?? Thanx

I was wondering where you got your parts(gaskets-diaphram). I have ajiffy also with same problem. Im hoping to be able to find them at an auto parts store tomorrow evening. Last time out I had to push in on the primer to keep it running.? Now in the garage the gas is pouring out of the diaphram gasket.?

Im heading to Presque Isle at Erie Pa. Thursday&Friday.
Thanks to any replies!

Here is a phone number I found to locate a dealer for the Tecumseh engine service centers. 1-800-558-5402.

You can also download a operating manual off of Jiffys web site

Check the serial number on the engine. I would think if you provided the serial number to the part center they could cross ref and find the model number from that serial number.

Engine model # should be stamped on the cowl (top part) of the engine.

ok after talking to a guy at Jiffy, the Tecumseh engine number is AV520 for the series 30 engine. Very nice guy and very helpful!! Jiffys customer service so far is top notch.

RB,

That is a great find! You've gotta love garage sales! Great places to find good deals. I keep looking for one at every one I go to, maybe someday I'll get my power auger too.

Mixture of 24:1 sounds kinda rich. You'll probably foul the plug at that mixture. I get by running all my 2 cycle engines on 40:1, regardlass of the manufacures recommendations. I used to mix at 32:1 but have switched to a synthetic oil (Klotz or Golden Spectro) and after keeping a close eye on the plugs have had no issues at 40:1, You'll find that "older" 2 cycles have recommendations of 20:1 - 24:1, those mixtures were based on the quality of the lubricants available in those days. Good Luck on the carb kit, a good small engine/lawn mower shop will be able to get one for you.

My Jiffy Legend is fairly new and it has a recommendation of 24:1 also. I have never had any problems with the plug fouling so far.

Went outside to look at mine. Its an AV520 also. Its about 5-7 years old.

As stated in another post, use Optimal or other synthetic and it will work with any and all ratios. 1.3 oz per gal of gas.

I also have the same unit even a little older, with the single pipe for a handle. I think it's 30 years old, had the carberator rebuilt for $30 runs great know. they still use the same powerhead in the augers today, the proper mixtue for the unit is 24:1 I am thinking about buying a new auger bit for it, they go for about $120 .

Glad I could help you out riverboy!!....Dave contact Jiffy and let them know your problem...they may help you out and send you the gear you need!!...After 20yrs. of owning my jiffy with no problems I just sold it to a buddy for $150.00 and purchased the brand new stealth version with the teflon auger!!! Hopefully I will have as much luck with this one as I did the other!!!.....What I use to do with the older one was when It was Below -0- degrees out I would spray the auger and chisel bit with pam!! then you wouldn't have the problem of it Icing Up!! Worked good!!....I also have a line on the new 2hp. stealth for a great price...I am going to pick it up Friday and use it down here so I won't have to haul my other one back and forth from the Cabin!!
