I know they are UGLYYYY! but they are delicious, boil, dip in butter, Poor Mans Lobster.
Anyway, I use tip ups with dead smelt, works pretty good, caught 10 with 23 flags last Monday. Average weight 3lbs, biggest 6 lbs.
Try it you might like it!!

I caught five of them at the State dock in Tawas one spring. We were fishing for steelies and browns with a slip sinker set up and baited the hooks with salmon spawn. They hit it preety good.

We were fishing in the Marina in Ontonagon, the fish seem to hit better near/after dark so gives us something to do after work.
Also they run up the Sturgeon River, they often set trap nets for them over there, for some reason you can't trap them on the Ontonagon.
I have heard they spawn in the winter which makes the accessible then but have never caught one during open water seasons.
