I am going to be up in the Tawas area Valentine's weekend, and will have a few solo hours free on the morning of the 15th.
Any decent icefishing up that way 'bout then? Species does not matter, just looking for a little action.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Email or PM info if it is more appropriate.
Thanks very much!
Kevin

Try Tawas Lk, it has good pike and bluegills.

That lake across from the abandonded air force base (Van Etten Lake?) in the county park also has some really nice perch in it. I've caught a lot near the island. That's a few miles to the north in Oscoda.

Van Etten lake should be hot for perch, pike and walleye. My friend is going this weekend and I will post results when he returns. AL:D :D

Kevin, got a call from my buddy Sun. night(2-8) and they are pounding the perch every morning.Everyone limited by noon on the SW side of the island, spoons with beads tipped with spikes are the ticket. I am sure minnows will work too. They were supposed to return Sun. night but with the fishing going so well they are not coming home till Tues. Hope this helps, good luck. AL

Talked to my buddy fishing Van ettan last night and he said the action slowed, they got 65 fish between 2 guys from 7:30 -12 noon. They are fishing this morning then heading home. Same spot, SW side of the island. ~~~~~~~~><> AL:D

Al, Where is the island from the DNR launch. There was a group of shantys out from the launch, and some more to the south across the lake. We were passing by the other day,and stopped for a look see.

Don't have a clue, never fished the lake before. I'm sure if there is a group of shantys out there that is the spot. Go out and quiz the guys fishing there. Take care~~~~~~~~><> AL:confused:

Uncle AL
If your at the launch on F-41, the island is to the north. I never fished over there but have heard they do good on that side.

Yeah, the launch is actually a county park launch. I know during the summer they have a $3 parking fee that you just drop into a slot on a pole, but I don't know if you're required to do that in the winter. Just go off the launch there, turn to the left and head to the island. Definitely perch in the area...

What about fishing on Tawas bay. I heard they are getting big pike. There must be perch there too. I have been thinking about renting a spearing shanty from All Seasons Sports. Does anyone have advise about Tawas Bay?

hey guys,
my father is coming up to do a little ice fishing with me this
weekend. we were going to go to simcoe, his informant says
bite is slow. wait a couple weeks, so next choice would probably
be st clair, or go try Van etten, never been there, and was wondering if the size was decent.
hate to have my dad drive four hours to catch 8 inch perch.
i have been to higgins three times this year, and haven't caught any perch over 8" yet. it's a little depressing.
thanks for any info

Thanks for the info folks, but looks like I won't be able to take advantage of it now.

on van ettan the closeest place to access the island in the summer is the launch at the state forest campground, not sure if they plow it in the winter time, there might be better place to access on the island oppsite side of the lake from the state forest campground.
have not been up there this year, but on Tawas Bay at times there is good good perch/walleye/pike fishing out from the point by Jerry's Marina and the bouey 4 area

Chad who is your dads informant ? You guy's missed out. Cooks bay may be slow, but everywhere else is banging.
