been out three times the past four days. the only advice i have is to get out early or late. Today got 15 fish w/in an hour and a half of sunrise but could not get a bite after that. But that is not a surprise w/ all the action going on. The fish out there are pigs the average size has been around 12 inches. Have also had atlest one eye on each trip. The light line has not been good on the eyes for me going 1/4 losing the three at the hole. Most of the fish have came on a minnow but have got a few on a wiggler on a dropper.

I hope to get out there some time next week, hope those pigs are still there. I use 2# test line for pan fish and was wondering what # line you was useing and got broke off. I was thinking I might have to load up with heaver line for thoes pigs.

Slowpoke, I use 4# test and had 2 snap my line yesterday. I think alot of it had to do with the 6" auger hole. I never really fished with any thing but an 8", until recently and man what a difference! EVERY fish I landed was a FIASCO, I could hear my line "twanging" on the bottom edge of the ice, scary sound when you see a 14"er twirling around under the hole. I had to stick my pole all the way in the hole on most of my fish, just to keep the line off the ice, then try to "feed" them up the small hole. Go with the bigger auger if ya can.

I have been using 3lb test, might have to beef it up. The line was changed at the start of the season so that is not the problem. I have been drilling 8 inch holes and don't think I would smaller those fish are pigs out there, and there are alot of walleye. Next time I'll be out there is Thur.

I started of with 6 lb ultra light line . It works fine on walleye pike and perch.

2lb line:eek: 2 lb perch;)

heres a great tip on fighting big fish through the ice on light line

once youre sure youve hooked something capable of breaking the line, take your rod and stick it down the hole into the water so that the tip is below the bottom of the ice and fight it from there

that way youll never break the line off on the ice!

I always use the hand over hand method ever since icing walleyes on the Canadian side in 25 plus FOW works everytime. I currently use 4lb Spider Wire cuz its the strength of 14 lb but the size of 4lb. Its got its good points and bad, but I've never broke off yet and I beat the living S#$t outta that line all over the edges and rough ice around the holes. It holds up to anything I've put it through so far. One thing I always do at the start of each season though is strip off about 10-12 foot or replace it when the spool gets too low. I had to adjust to it a bit, but I really like it alot.

Hand over hand gives me more control when i'm fishing for panfish or when I'm fishing in shallow water for walleye.

I do have some very nice equipment, nice rods, little ice fishing reels, ect...but I like my old $5 plastic rod / real combo best. That's what I was taught to ice fish with and I feel I have better control of what's on the end of my line.

I only use the good stuff when I'm targeting Walleye on the Saginaw River or deep water fishing for Walleye. If I'm panfish fishing in water 25' or deeper I'll use the good rod and reels as well. When I do use my little spinning reels, I like my Diawa SS tournament 700 best because of it's smooth drag. The drag on the little ice fishing reels you can buy for $15-$20 aren't very reliable.

just my 2 cents

Where exactly is Genos? I've heard alot about it, but never knew where it was.

Fished Brandeberg with a buddy Sunday. Sunrise to about 2pm. Went to the left. After a couple moves we got into some feeding schools in 6 fow. It was pretty awesome fishing while they were there. Fish at all depths and all sizes. The would hit any bait, I actually caught a few on a chart. tear drop, bare hook. (no time to re-bait!) Schools would be around 5 - 10 minutes then gone for 1/2 hour or so. We ended up with almost 50 nice size perch. There were hogs in the hole, but the smaller (7-10 inch) fish would beat them to the line. Also had a "master angler" mud puppy in the hole. He just wouldn't leave. After clunking about a dozen times with a 1 oz. sinker he finally got the hint. The damn thing actually tried to eat the sinker.

Its off of Jefferson south of Metro park and north of the new DNR ramps by Crocker.
