I am new to the epic sport of ice and man. i have been fishing in that little bay in metro for a few weeks now. what is all that cracking about? seems like every few minutes I heard a good crack. When I get up to leave I see a bunch of new cracks a few millimeters wide. Is this normal? Is this the universes' sign that I should go on the south beach diet? I would like to try other areas on the big lake, but I am afraid I will end up on a helicopter. Any thoughts? thanks !

With it being this cold the cracking you here is--its making ice.
When water freezes it expands thus the cracking noise. Thats a good sound.

Fear of ice is healthy though. I'm a bit too healthy in that respect myself ;)

Walleye Mike is correct as usual. It is a bit unnerving though. Sometimes when the lake is open and the wind pushes the water toward the frozen part of the lake, that can cause some ice thunder as well! :)

Thanks I cut a few mornings short, when I was getting some good action. I wouldn't mind goin under, but my wife would be pissed! Walleye Mike that makes sense, thanks. Nice catch by the way.

I'll agree, it is unnerving but when it's this cold and the ice is "talking" it's a GOOD thing ! I almost had to change my drawers one time because it happened RIGHT UNDER MY FEET !

Speaking of cracks. I’m sitting in my shanty and I hear a load POP I look out of the door and theirs a fresh crack running right under MY shanty. So you say so what…but the wind was blowing out and I was on the wrong side.
