I just wanted to let you all know that this is my favorite web site!! Last year was my first year ice fishing...and my first year surfing this site. (under a different name). I've picked up a lot of good pointers.......and I've also learned that I'm not the only one who some times comes home frustrated after not seeing any fish. This is like a frequently asked question site where a rookie like me doesn't have to ask the questions.....but I do have one...when you talk about radios out on the lake.....do you mean cb radios??? I'd love to be able to check in with somebody (or even evesdrop) to see how its going. Welll thanks for all the good info......and Good Luck All!!

the radios are the small hand held FRS radios 14 channels,,,they have a 2 mile range and are inexpensive,,,you can pick them up almost anywhere,,k-mart,mijer,radio shack, and the sporting goods stores,,,the one I have was about $20,,lots of different mans,,I know Motorola has a new one out that also has a GPS unit built into it,,but I do not know the price,,,the channel MS Members seem to be using this year is 07,,but the radios also have a scan feature if you are not sure what channel everyone is on,,
If you don't mind me asking why did you change your user name?

Thanks for the heads up Tonga....but what I was wondering is could I recieve the same signal on a hand held cb.... because i already have one of those. Or are those a different frequency?? For my name change.....When I first heard about this site, I sat down with my brother and he was so excited to tell me about this site that we rushed here... and when they asked me for a user name I didnt realize I could use a handle so i used my real name and now since I decided to finally post I wanted to change my name for privacy.

are you sure its a motorola? i know garmin has a FRS/GMRS radio with GPS called the Rhino120. THe Rhino110 is just GPS i believe. anyways, the 120 cost around 250 a peice..... i have a friend thats a lucky dog and has a pair of em.... NEAT little gadget them are.
anyways, the normal radio channel for m-s.com people is channel 7 with security code 0 (even supported on radios that do not have security codes and just channel 7).

I bought a pair on sale last week at Best Buy for $49.99 with rechargeable batteries and a charger. They work much like the Nextells...depending on how you have them set up. I can see some possibilities for them being real handy on vacations etc. even if you're out of the state at a mall and want to split from your spouse while she wants to look at whatever while you are looking for fishing reels....or getting a beer at the local tavern..etc..

Welcome to the best site on the web High Stepper. The CB radio's will not work with the FRS radio's I have seen FRS radio's on sell for $20 apiece.

Unfortunatly the CB is NOT compatible with the FRS... totally different . can not recieve one from the other.
Steve, the RHino 110, does do both, but has few features on the GPS side then the better one..
The FRS radios come in different price ranges, Some are even FRS/GMRS radios...still work great, but to use ALL the channells on the GMRS ones you are requiered to have a license from the FCC. you can still use them without the lic, but only on the FRS channells..Our site channel is 7 which is compatible with BOTH FRS, and GMRS

MSJuiceman,
Garmin does make the Rhino GPS/FRS combo. The biggest difference between the units is that the higher dollar one lets you coordinate with others with the same so their position shows up on your GPS screen. Pretty cool but not sure what I'd use it for! (They market it as a good hunting tool but I believe it is illegal to use radioes to hunt here in Ohio.)
Garmin also makes a PDA now that has GPS built in....not sure I'd use that either. I have a GPS 76 by Garmin and love it. I used to have a Garmin 45, loved that too until it was wiped out by waves on the boat.
It wouldn't surprise me though that if Garmin has been selling a lot of these that Motorola might jump in....not sure if they make any GPS tho!

its illegal to have cbs or radio contact with another hunter in Ohio???? Just seems like an odd regulation to me.

Highstepper,
You can also listen to FRS radios on a scanner. If you need the frequencies I can post them here.
