Hi guys, looking for a little help on where and what to use to get some walleye through the ice in kalamazoo or van buren county. I know of a few lakes like gravel, cedar, and gun having walleye but I don't seem to know where to get them or if I'm using the right stuff. Any help would be great! PM me if it's something you want to keep secret.:D

You might also want to try Lake of the Woods over to the west of Decatur. I haven' seen it personally, but my dad has seen walleyes caught while fishing the channels for bluegills. This was 2-3 years ago. I believe the DNR stocks it with walleyes.

I have also been searching for this information. I would like to find a local lake with good populations of Eyes. If you get any info or anyone knows of any, I would also appreciate a pm or reply. Thanks!

The DNR stocks Paw Paw in Berrien County, Cedar and Maple in Van Buren County. Hope this helps...

Between the three lakes, what one would be your preferred one?

I haven't fished any of them...yet. I did some research for this winter (interested in fishing different lakes) using the DNR stocking reports as my initial guide, and am now in the process of trying to discover other knowledge (maps, local bait shops, local angler tips, etc.). If I get out to them I'll pass along what I find out.
Anyone who would like to help with the knowledge discovery out ther-I'm all ears, and I can drill a lot of holes.:D

The DNR has also stocked LOTW every other year since at least 1997.
Anyone who fishes Maple should watch the ice, due to the current flowing through the lake.
live2fishdjs,
There is also Simon Lake just across the border north of Elkhart down in your neck of the woods. The hoosiers dump a lot of walleyes in that lake every year. They even had a walleye tournament there 2 years ago. It's a pretty small lake, and they put quite a few christmas tree structures in it every few years. My friend lives on the lake and caught about 75 keeper eyes out of it last year. Note that hoosier regs are 14" min, bag limit of 6, if you fish there.

Simon or Simonton. Never heard of Simon, but know where Simonton is.

Sorry, it is Simonton, I think the hwy that goes right by it is 19?
msuICEMAN, being a U of M grad student, nothing would be sweeter than throwing some barbs your way, especially after Saturday. LOTW is shorthand for Lake of the Woods, from my earlier post. It is a somewhat common abbreviation in fishing circles, but surprisingly, often refers to the famous lake on the MN/ON border instead of the one in Decatur, MI.

aaahhhh, didn't know there was a lake of the woods in MI.... i have fished the one in MN a couple years ago. that and Rainy Lake. am i missing something? saturday? whats going on saturday? hockey game? i'm kinda out of the loop nowadays.
LOTR is a fairly common acronym towards the lord of the rings novels in nerd rings that i frequent.

I'd like to get some more info too. All I have to offer right now is that Cedar lake has a good number of fish in it. I heard that you can catch them straight out from the landing. Maybe if we can come up with a plan we could do a mini walleye kalamazoo area outing!

i have fished all of the above mentioned lakes at one time or another. more than once. while there is a multitude of lakes that the d.n.r. stocks, very few contain what i would call a sport fishery. in laymans terms- if you catch 1 your doing super. if you seriously want to catch some 'eyes look elsewhere. the only real good walleye fishing i know of around the area is the kalamazoo river (unedible?) or the black river in south haven. i personally caught a couple of 10 pounders there. guys have been plying the breakwalls since december and will continue till may. you may not be standing on the ice but everything is frozen. trust me dress warm. good luck!
