Attempted to fish Lake Chemung this Saturday but it looked like I was the 5,000th person to arrive there. Parking didn't seem to be available and my poor S-10 got stuck for a couple minutes in the parking lot.
So I said forget it and headed over to Kensington. My nephew and I fished near the west boat launch for a while and caught a lot of microperch. I didn't want to waste any more bait on those guys so we randomly walked a little to the east, got into some deeper water and set up shop. As soon as darkness fell some decent crappies came on. Between the 2 of us, we brought home 26. All came between 6pm and 8pm. It was the first time I've ever tried using those Rosies from Cabelas. The crappies seem to love them...

The ice was fine. Minimum 5" every hole I drilled. Good luck to you if you're heading out there!

Yeah, I threw about half of them in the deep fryer last night. Doesn't get much better than that. Good luck to you in the Irish Hills area!

Hey "RichP" - great job on those Crappies!
I saw those "Rosie Reds" in the tank at Cabelas last Friday (I thought the were goldfish at first) and wondered if they worked.
Now I'll have to pick some up! Thanks for sharing your pics!:D

RichP- What are rosies? I did a search of Cabela's site and found nothing.

Rosies are live bait, they look similar to goldfish, only slightly smaller and unlike goldfish, are legal to use for bait. Cabelas sells them for $2.99 per scoop, which I think ends up being several dozen. They're in the bait shop area of Cabelas and called "Rosie Reds." I've also seen in many pet stores like Petland in the aquarium section they sell "feeder rosies" which are usually like a dozen for $1.00. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these are the same thing. I've got a buddy who swears by these things, which is what prompted me to finally try them. Seemed to work pretty good Saturday.
I was wondering how far off the bottom you were fishing the other week when you caught those crappie? The transducer on my flasher is messed up. I would like to get out there again for crappie but it can be difficult at times without a flasher if they are suspended.

I believe I was in about 20FOW that night fishing just a little bit off the bottom. That's usually what I do. I don't own a flasher or anything, so if the bottom action isn't working I usually just experiment with different depths. I've had some good luck lately. I caught these guys below a couple days ago at another small lake in the area. Once again they were loving the rosies. The deep fryer has been working overtime! Good luck to you...
