Holloway can be a difficult place to find fish at times. I don't really hear of a lot of guys fishing it in the winter. I think they also drain it down a few feet in the winter. Not sure how that effects the ice and fish.

It's hard to find the fish. To find the fish need to find channel and drop off's. Still have to fight for the fish to bite though. I'm not sure about them draining some of it or not but they might.

I live out on Holloway. The water is down at least 3-4 feet, which should concentrate fish in the deeper spots. I personally havent fished it in 10 years or so, we used to catch catfish, bluegill, perch, crappie, and pike. I have not caught a walleye through the ice out there. From what I remember it is pretty difficult to locate the fish. Most of the drop offs are located on the old riverbed, I havent checked ice conditions, so be careful. That lake has always been hairy with the ice, 10 inches one spot, 3 inches the next. I always hear of people catching fish right out from the boat launch off stanley road but I used to fish out from the campground. Try getting a map of the lake to help locating any holes.
Halloway having fish is just a nasty rumor.;)
The State says it has more walleye per acre than any other inland lake. That might be true, but I sure can't prove it.  Those fish are even more tight lipped than the Stony Creek fish.

Hey sometimes the imaginary holloway walleye bite my crankbaits in the summer....sometimes...not often :) Guys I do not know the ice conditions as I don't go by there much during ice season, since I don't have much plans to fish it. I've talked with some people on here about how I would love to be able to find the crappie in there...I bet they are large. Obviously fish will be in the river channel, or nearby the river channel. But that is still a lot of water to cover.

The river channel goes from one end to the other. finding it and the fish is pretty difficult. Since it sounds like it's not fished much should be large fish in there. The resevoir is close to 2,000 acres in size which is a lot of water to cover. They use to plant it with different kinds of fish but haven't in a while.

Troll in the summer and you'll have the channel memorized in no time....and you'll also lose 50 bucks worth of hot n tots. Post a report if you go,....I may just go for a drive soon to see if I can scout someone's old holes for ya.

Thnx scotty. I'm going to go fishing there when I know when the ice is safe enough to get to the channel. I don't have a boat unfurtantly.

I live right by Halloway, I asked around and apparently the eyes migrate to head waters of the river, making them M.I.A. in the winter. In the summer I have found long lining crawler harnesses to be very productive, put on a slip sinker about a foot above harness and slowly drag it across the bottom, the channel snakes through the resovoir and the harness goes up and down the edges. You'll learn where the snags are harnesses are cheaper than hot n tots!! Good luck I'll be on the sag river where the eyes are not M.I.A. (most of the time)

Don't waste your time. I've heard of people catching fish in the winter there but have never met anyone who did the actual catching.

I agree about a lot of them probably are up in the river starting very soon. There's a lot of walleye up in that river its just a big secret :)

Ive never ice fished the holloway, but there are tons of fish in it, but people are correct, sometimes they are heard to find. THere are a lot of walleye in there, which some pretty big ones to be found. Tons of smallies in the rocks, tons of largemouth in the grass, tons of channel cats on the flats, carp everywhere, and a decent pike fishery too. But like i said, my experience in all in the summer. It should be worth a shot.

I wouldn't waste my time out there this time of year. You're more likely to catch a walleye in Lake Nepessing- and that's saying alot. The fish are never in there heavy until the middle of May. The Saginaw River is a much better bet even on a bad day. I'm running down to Selfrige tomorrow. You've got to be a die hard to fish Lapeer county.

I fished the river channel on the south side of the Mt. Morris Rd bridge this afternoon and evening. I maked quite a few schools of fish moving through but not a single hit. Most of the fish were within two feet of the bottom. I was in 13 fow.

I thought about jigging that same spot sinc e the sag river was a bust today, but I opted to go gill fishing, still might try it this week. How close to the bridge can you fish safely, or how close did you fish? On the south west side of the bridge the channel gets 16ft if you stay in line with the second set of pilings. Hope those were schools of walleye , could have been cats, I caught a thousand cats there in the summer. Maybe crappie or carp who knows, we must catch one and find out!

Scotty,
I was straight out from the path that leads down from the parking lot. I didn't go closer to the bridge since the snow cover on the ice looked stained and different from the surrounding area. I bet they were schools of cats. That was just the feeling I was getting while sitting out there.
I think your feeling might be right. I take my kids to that exact spot at ice out and we nail the channel cats. Lots of carp in there too. Never hear much about people catching carp and cats through the ice, or Halloway would be a hot spot. LOL

That's the truth. Maybe if we fished with a big gob of worms on the bottom you could catch the cats. Or imagine trying to get a carp through a six in hole!
