Was wondering what caliber of gun you mostly use for Rabbits. I Prefer my Ruger .22 with Busnell scope.

I use a Winchester 1300 Walnut in 20 gauge with a 22" barrel and carry my Taurus Tracker .22 revolver. I just purchased a Remington 597 HB in .22lr that will see plenty of use. I am also looking at a Stoeger Upland Special side by side in 28 gauge that I think will make the ideal bunny gun (pat's also). I love the way those SxS's feel and it's cheap enough that I won't be scared to pound brush with it.

Can you hit a bunny on the run with a .22 using a scope? I usually use my.22 with the iron sight, but since all 3 of them are mis-firing (2 really old and one is in need of a reall good cleaning on the inside) I decided to use my .410 this morning. It's a single shot, but I didn't miss! (this time anyway!) I think I'll be using the .410 alot more.

Usually I take my single shot .410 If I am looking for some added fun I take my .44 pistol out with shot shells.

of course i can hit one on the run...............sometimes. The power on the scope is only 1.75 by 4. I just like the crosshairs.

Anyone ever use a .22 pistol? I never really thought about using mine, but that sure would make it interesting.

My grandpa uses his .22 pistol on occasion and he claims it is real tough but very fun.

Started out using a 20 guage when I was a kid. I now use my 12 guage. My most fun is with my bow though. Next challenge will be to try and use a muzzleloader.

I usually go out stalking on those warm sunny days and I use my .22 rifle or my .22 revolver. If I was hunting with a dog I would take out my pump 20 ga.

I use a mod 42 winchester pump .410. I got is last year and the thing is practically an extension of my arm. I'm 10 for 11 on rabbits with it. The funny thing is I use to hunt with a 16 ga and I missed a lot lot more.

We need to add another category to this poll: Bow. I've hunted rabbits a lot with a bow. It's fun as heck as long as you're not too hungry.

None of the above! I use my Rem. 1100 in a 28 ga. Why no 28ga. listed? LOL I do realize it's not a popular gauge. But super for bunnies. Also great for upland birds. If I don't use that, I also use a model 42, like Deershutzen.

20 GA. Featherlight when hunting with a dog or kicking brushpiles.

i thought more people would like the challenge of hitting a running rabbit with a .22 It sure is fun unloading a clip in 3 seconds.

I used to use a .22....but got sick of missing all the time...lol.

Now I use a .410 and do a lot better.

I use a 20 gauge.

I don't like shooting 22's around the pups.

I don't have dogs. The rabbits I shoot are running FAST. I have used a .22, but the success rate is much lower than with my 12 gauge.

You forgot the 28 gauge! I use a stoeger 28 with double triggers and imp. cylinder and modified chokes and whatever shot I have laying around

Single Shot Ithaca 20ga! I think the single shot makes it a little more challenging.

I use my Mossberg 9200 12 gauge. My sons use their Remington 870 12 gauge, but sometimes my son Brandon uses his .22 cal Romanian Army Training rifle.

Well, for most of my bunny hunting days, i have used a 12 gauge, with 6 or 7.5 shot. However, this year i have switched over to a 16 gauge with low brass 6 shot. I am not that brave to go waste a box of shells shooting a .22 at running rabbits. Oh well, whatever you use, as long as you are seeing some rabbits, and having fun, that is all that matter.

You forgot to list the 28 ga in the poll. The 28s are sweet and have an excellent shot pattern - just my thoughts.

I would never shoot a rifle around hounds.

Shotgun only..any gauge you prefer.

Hunt_n_Fish
01-26-2004, 08:31 PM
i guess i don't see your point Line-Loc. wouldn't you rather have one bullet being shot around the dogs rather than all the shot in a shotgun??

Line-Loc
01-26-2004, 10:13 PM
I guess I should have said......I've been hunting with people that use 22's for rabbits behind dogs. Not one of "them" were safe with the rifle, they all were auto's and they all shot every bullet they had in the gun as fast as they could at every rabbit that they saw. There were bullets flying everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was enough for me to see that they did not respect the gun for what it is," a rifle", not a toy pop gun.

This is just my opinion and I don't mean to make anyone mad, use what gun you want to.

I understand Line-Loc. I have been with one person in particular that shot like that and i didn't even feel safe. But me personally am careful of where everything is and only shoot at rabbits after they have been run for awhile. So most of the time the ONE dog i hunt behind or with is usually 40 or more yards behind. I also know that a rabbit won't get hit if the crosshairs aren't on him or a little in front. Basically i don't unload a clip if i don't have a good shot or shots. ;) Good Huntin' :) :)

I use my longbow while I run my beagles, once in a while I get one too! I like to here the music more than killing bunnies. But don't tell the deer that.

I would never let any one use a .22 shotgun only with my dogs mostly for safety reasons
What is a .22 shotgun??
I might consider using a shotgun if i was with a PACK of dogs but i am not (just one great dog). Also i KNOW where the dog is and i don't shoot that way. It is 30 or more yards away to the side not down from where i am shooting. I would never shoot towards a dog.
Good huntin' everyone

Thats the great thing about having your own hounds.

You call the shots.

Many guys use 22's to shoot rabbits safely.

Others only use shotguns.

As long as your having fun and the fellas you hunt with understand your rules everyone is happy.:D

I use the trusty Remington 597, Took 15 bunny’s so far this season.

If I carry a gun, it's either my double .410, or a .22, but out of the 60-70 times a winter in the field with my dogs, I may carry the gun 1 or 2 times. Last year I never carried a gun, this year once, and I passed up my shots....too close!:)

Just love to hear those ladies sing!....Amy,Casey,Ida,Pebbles,Sandy, and puppies on the way.

.22 cal Romanian Army Training rifle, bought mine at Dunhams for 59.00 but its anywhere from 49 to 79. this little 5 shot bolt action is the most dead on .22 i have ever owned. I suggest every one own one. I shot woodchucks a lot and i use iron sights and the trainer has 3 flip sights 25, 50 and 100 yards and they are all on the money, its scary to take it squirrl hunting, vital shots from 100 yard away.
BUY ONE, you'll be amazed

I prefer my .410 T.C. pistol. Only one shot but if you miss the dogs will bring them back around.

For my 13th birthday my grandpa gave me my first hunting license, (legal in those days) and a box of shells. My dad gave me a used Savage 20 ga. single. I had all I could do to break it open and couldn't wait to get bigger and strong enough to open it as easily as my dad could.

That was over 40 years ago and the Savage 220A has taken more than its fair share of bunnies. I tried my Mossberg 12 ga. for a short while in the 80's but the 20 is my favorite rabbit gun. It still looks and performs great.

I have to think though that if I had a good hound, I'd love using a .22 rifle. I tried it a few times with Dad's beagle back in the 70's and it's a blast listening to the dog while waiting to pick off the rabbit on his way back. One clean shot to the head and no bb's to pick out of the meat. Man! That's bunny huntin!:D

Yeah, that would be scary. Hunting with other people or with dogs changes things. IMHO, a little self control is the key to a good hunt with a rifle and a dog. Exercise it when the rabbit breaks...hold your fire and let the dog do its job. Just pick your spot to stand and wait for the rabbit to return. The dog is usually far enough behind to be safely out of range.

My high school buddy lost both legs while rabbit hunting with careless companions. I never go with people I don't know or trust. My favorite partners are my brothers. We were all trained by the same man.:)

to use my Bow but since I wasn't able to get out that much this year and wanted some for the freezer I used my Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 ga. I have also used my Remington bolt action .22 and my Ruger 22 Hornet.
