My wife tells me that we are vacationing a week on Houghton Lake this summer (maybe the last week of June)....Who am I to argue?
I have never been to Houghton Lake and am unfamiliar with the area.
Anyway, I need to find a cabin that sleeps 8, is on the lake, has a pier to tie my Lund up to. A little privacy would be good vs. beign stacked up against a bunch of other cabins sharing the same shoreline. It would be nice if the beach was swimmable so the kids have something to do. It would also be cool to be able to fish off the pier, but not absolutely necessary.
Does such a place exist? My internet search has not turned up much. Any recommendations/testimonials from Michigan Sportsmen members would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello from Houghton Lake,
Depends on what side of the lake and where you want to fish. In Prudenvill- east bay there is Shea's Lodge with several seperate lodges (cabins) Bob and Laura Shea run a great place. No AC in the rooms of the main lodge. Real nice private beach. Fishing east bay. There is a run from the resturant 123 Lake Street straight accross the lake to Harvey's Marina that you can find walleye in. Also, there is the Best Western on the south shore near the DNR boat launch. They have rooms that face the lake, with a indoor pool and hottub. Nice beach. They have a small cottage next door they rent out and you still can use the pool and hottub in the hotel. Cottage is pretty small. Sleeps 4 maybe 6 if 2 are very small kids that can sleep on a small sleeper sofa. All three places have a dock. Houghton Lake is not deep enough to have a fishing pier. There is a fishing pier out on old US 27 N. overlooking the flats. People go out there for pan fish and to observe the birds and eagles. Call the Houghton Lake Travel and Toursim Bureau for lodging in the area. Tell Bob and Laura Shea or HLTTB that Sandy Striggow sent you. Let me know if you need more information.

I rented a home from these folks last summer...Great people, and they have several homes on the lake available, not small rental cabins, but actual HOUSES...all have lakefront, and have docks... Lots of pictures on-line so you can see what you are renting, We rented Hays Place, smaller 2 bedroom,(1250 sq ft) but cozy and easy to get to. Affordable too...
I'll definatly use them again

Most of the cabins around Houghton are the little 500-700 sq ft shacks... these are much better

I used that website and reserved a place!
Is anyone aware of an online lake map showing lake depth?

BAMBAM,
The website for the HLCOC has lots of good info, including a lake map!

The best one I've seen is the "Fishing Map" offered at most sporting good stores, They'll have ones for most popular lakes in Michingan, I spent the seven bucks and got one at Bass Pro Shop.

You're not going to "spread out" anywhere on Houghton Lake, I think every square inch of that lake is developed, however, If I remember correctly, from Prudenville on up to the Cut River and around to North Point (opposite from the town of Houghton Lake) is a bit less crowded. However, the fishing is worth the people, I love fishing on that lake. Lots of Hammer handles since they eradicated the weeds, but the fising is definitely easier without the hundreds of acres of dead, matted milfoil. You can actually troll now!!!!

IF you want to go to a great swimming lake, get one on higgins, best swimming in the world, IMO!!! You can get into good perchin, too, have to hit it right, though. For fishing, houghton cant be beat in summer. Went to a place around the SSWB, and just NAILED, i mean jsut NAILED the pike and walleye!!!! IN two days, i think we got around 40 eyes, all above 15, up to 23. We got well over 80 pike, most in the low 20s inch, a couple between 28 and 32, and not to mention jsut loads of 8-9 inch gills, we could've got our limit of everything within an hour if we wanted. Just go along the edge of the weedbed, drift, or slow troll with crawler harnesses, gold, and cast out shad raps while drifting for pike, and the occasional eye on it.....non stop, for every about 4 or 5 gills, you would get an eye, or a pike on the harness.

Stayed at Shea's when it was called that they had some decent cottages. We had the loft of one of these and there was plenty of room. Decent place to tie up your boat and the huge courtyard has a privacy fence around it. Baydog

Try this place, rates seem resonable.
