I love fishing cats, but I have never tried it in the spring, although I hear that is when they are spawning and bite the best. I am eagerly anticipating the 1st spring trip, but I have a problem. I dont know when that is. When can I first start fishing cats? And when is the peak of the season. If anyone out there can help me w/ this, please do. Thanks alot everyone!

I dont believe there is a closed season for cats.....but u speak of fishing them during the spawn which in Michigan doesnt occur untill late may- early july.......making June the prime time for Michigan cats.....We dont neccesarily target cats but catch quite a few channel cats and flatheads in the Grand in the month of June while targetting wallyes and smallmouth.

I haven't fished for Cats in Michigan but quite alot in Central Indiana. I'd guess in April they would start upstream into tributaries. Anchor up stream from log/brushpiles and let the current carry the smell of the bait into the logpile. The cats will follow the scent to the bait. Great fighters. Great tasting out of the cold water:)
