Has anyone been out there yet? If so let's go? I just go laid-off and need some fishing and hunting partners.

I don't know but I'm guessing that the canal isn't frozen over yet. The bay may have some ice on it but we had some good winds until yesterday that may have blown the water out or the ice out.

Keep me posted. I really want to get my daughter out there. She really enjoyed ice fishing last year and got some new winter clothes for Christmas she wants to try out.

On the bright side it looks like the warmest day in the next week to two weeks is 34. It won't be long. Don't push it. I don't want to hear about anyone falling through out there.

Yeah, i bet the wind before really screwed things up. But, now, the wind has been calm for a day now, and, the next three days, too, shuld be about 3 inches of ice by sunday or so....but, there will be weak spots, and, the canal will be VERY iffy, VERY, VERY iffy, another good 11/2 of this, should be good to go, but, i wouldn't even check until until sometime next week..

I have a relative that lives on the canal and the canal water is very, very low. So it might be frozen earlier than you think but I'm sure the bay will take longer. Also, does anyone else know it as Frenchman's Bay because thats how I have known it since I was a youngster.

I've always known it as Airport Bay or Ford Bay.

I always calle it Gibraltor bay before i came to this site, still do, but, more people call it airpot on this site, so, just refer to it as that.

I visually checked the bay today and it is getting there. Another week and it should be fine. I saw no one on the ice. The water is very low.

It won't be me but I'm sure someone will rip that thing down if it's true.

I'll make a call tomorrow to Grosse Ile PD and see if they know anything about it. If it is sold and no one is to be on the property I'm sure they were notified to keep an eye on it. I know someone who works over there who might shed some light on the subject.

In the last couple of years I parked at the far end of the airport parking lot and walked on Frenchman's Creek. Long walk to the bay itself and lots of current past where the inlet comes in, (about 1/2 mile down from the road) The creek itself can be loaded with fish at times; usually 1st ice. Even if its only a foot and a half deep there below the ice, it sometimes produces lots of 7-10 inch perch, big sunnies and some of the biggest crappies you'll ever see. Timing is everything. Gunrod, make sure you ask the PD if we can still park there... I wouldn't want to drive over an hour for nothing:)

You can no longer access airport bay via the wondell well. The property is now fenced. I drove by there this moring. I did not see any cars parked near Groh road where some guys normally park and walk along the fence to the bay.

It's true. I contacted G.I.P.D. and they confirmed the owner fenced and posted the land. Probably under pressure from the surrounding landowners. They did imply that the land owner may be receptive to giving permission to some to access the bay through the lands.

Anyone have access to the city offices in Grosse Ile to find out who the landowner is? I'd be willing to speak with him/her but don't have time to track them down. Even if it's just access for a weekend for an outing or something it would be a start.

Is there any other access???

Access is going to be really tough, now that the wonderwell is blocked off. Darn it:mad:
It's a long walk but we used to park in those old appartments just before the airport.
The new condos back in there is a possibilty but I highly doubt if we'd get permission. They used to put arreators around the docks to keep Ice fishermaen out.
This problem may take some brainstorming.
lets keep posted with ideas.:)

My dad says you used to be able to walk in along the fence for the Airport but parking was a problem. I'm gonna take a drive probably on Sunday to take a look.
