My group of guys are considering a Caribou Hunt in Quebec. Can anyone recommend an outfitter or fill us in on any known pitfalls. Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you talking about a winter hunt?

If so, Mirage is probably the best..... but good luck trying to book a hunt with them. I am on the waiting list for both 2004 and 2005, and was told that there are already a pile of other hunters ahead of me.

I'm going to Wyoming for pronghorn instead. :(

Here's another Quebec outfitter that has received good reviews. A coworker has been there a couple times and speaks very highly of this place:

I to was wondering about a hunt like this  Thanks for the INFO so far. Can anyone tell me thats done this before ? Whats the drive, distance in hours not milage ,from Windsor to Montreal? Also roughly what is the average Airfare rates from Montreal to the Northern parts of Quebec where these Outfitters are. I could research it but could take a while.Maybe someone here has done it recently and could let us know ?
Thank You

Well if you’re in for a winter hunt, not many guys fly. The drive from the Flint area of Michigan is about 24-30 hours depending on weather. The roads are all good except the last 100 miles or so, as this is a gravel road. Gas stations along the route are about 300-350 miles apart. These are the only ones around so be prepared and take extra gas (it is a little pricey there too). The hunt can be fantastic or non-existent as weather plays a big part in the migration. This area hunts the wintering grounds and the colder the weather the better. I have personally had the fantastic hunts, seeing thousands of Caribou and many nice bulls. Although some of the biggest bulls have already dropped their antlers, many are left. I have taken them with both a bow and a rifle. As long as the large reservoirs are frozen the hunts can be great. I hunted with Nouchimi and the accommodations and meals were satisfactory, other than you have to drive 40-75 miles one way from camp to get to where the animals are. The best time to be there is around Thanksgiving, opening day there is November 15th. These dates are very hard to reserve, and having a large group or booking years in advance are the best way to get the preffered hunts.

I can get you some info on an Outfitter north of montreal.

The guy I hunt with went on his first caribou hunt this Sept. or Oct. (I forget the dates) and he took 2 caribou in the first two using his bow! Everybody in camp limited.

He went with a fella who has been there 5 times and the other guy took 2 each time. The other guy took a book bou for his 2nd tag.

Off the top of my head I can't recall the name but it is a big one everybody knows. (Caribou Adventures?) there is another one really close (Topoc or something like that)

They do European style hunts (if you want) where you haul in your own food, then they set you up with caribou each day.

I think his total price including gas and including the food they brought was around $1100-1200/pp/7 days (5 day hunt).

Oh and the drive from Detroit was around 30 hours. stopping every 3 hours to stretch for a couple minutes.

One last point to bring up is somebody in one of the groups before their hunt never came back. No trace was found. They suspect he either fell in a river and drown and washed out to sea, or a bear found him, ate him, and buried the rest.

song_dog_slammer,... I also wanted to mention that Tim's group consists of 12-14 people EACH year that they go. On every visit to Mirage Outfitters ALL of them taged out with 2 Caribou, along with a wide assortment of Ptarmigan's  ;) :D

P.S. Ptarmigan's are similar to doves. ;)
