Can I get the names of couple lakes that produce decent smelt through the ice? Thanks alot. I am heading up to Kalkaska this weekend and wanted to do some fishing.

If you are trying for Smelt through the Ice, I recomend waiting a week or two...Houghton is mostly frozen and fairly safe, but most of the deeper lakes that would hold Smelt are not yet safe....Check carefully, and be careful
My friend told me he overheard a State cop talking at Lymann's today & he was telling of a 30" steelie his wife caught in Higgins while trolling from a boat. He said it was caught yesterday. I posted this because of Higgins being a good smelt lake. I guess it will be a while for this one to freeze over.

Thanks for the info (both posts). Just use small tear drops and wax worms at night?
I'm not an expert, but I use a Hali & tipped with a spike. They sink real fast to keep you in the action. Make sure you sharpen your hook.
