I took my 8 year old nephew Ice fishing for his first time yesterday. We hit a little lake in newaygo county. I have had much better days for catching fish but the company was hard to beat. It was a pleasure watching him get a few fish. I normally would have released all the fish that was kept but a growing boy needs to eat what he catches. My wife killed the batteries in the digi cam while opening gifts earlier in the day and failed to remember till we got back with are catch she had the other set. Here is a couple after the fact photos. There was 3" of ice but the edges where getting soft. I have been on the Ice for 3 weeks now and have been doing very well. Yesterday was the first time out I have not taken a limit. One must really know the lakes to be safe out there right now. I have been limited to a select few. With the warm weather today It may do in the Ice fishing.

A little better pic of his catch!

Great Job!!

I have found fishable ice in Northern Newaygo Co (hear that WDGibby ).... but have yet to find ice with biting or even markable fish underneath!!!!!

I was on Nichols Sat and got nothing. I did see one small keeper pike landed. On Friday, stopped by to check conditions and no good either, one guy had a 10" perch, only fish I saw.

Mind I ask what lakes you're hittin that I'm missing?? My 8 yr old would rather catch many gill's than the nice pike SHE caught last week!!!

Thanks all.

This kid is more than hooked on fishing be it summer or winter. He will go non-stop and never quit. To get him to leave a lake is tuff. He only gets to go when I can take him. I took him on vacation with my family this summer and he fished from 5:30 in the morning till 11:30 at night 3 days straight and that was his choice I would ask him if he wanted to go get a bite to eat and it was always the same just a couple more fish. He is one of the best fishing buddies a guy could have.

I would love to share this little jewel of a lake with people but I have had to many bad experiences giving up a name. If I was on a big lake like Cadillac or Mitchell I would drop the name in a heartbeat. This lake is just to small. SORRY
I have hit Nichols 2 times this year and did very well. I have not kept a fish but released somwhere around 50 gills and 7 keeper size pike. Find deep cabbage and you will find fish. Good luck.
