Decided to hit a stand this morning, hoping to catch a buck cruising or just moving along. This stand is on the edge of a cattail slough a thick swail, a tiny oak stand a winterwheat field to the east and a pasture to the west. Man i got out befor light, and as soon as it got light enough to see i saw movement in winterwheat field. OH MY GOD!!!! I saw the biggest buck i've ever seen while hunting strolling across the field. About 150 yds out, he then made his way behind me into the crick bottom. Expecting him to move away from me i just sat there stunned at what i just saw. 45 minutes later i heard a cattial crunch behind me. I slowly turned expecting to see a doe or fawn when my eyes were filled with a monster rack walking towards me 75 yds away. As he approched I carefully stood up and grabbed my bow. This was him, I couldn't believe it. At 45 yds he froze. Looke under my stand. DOH!! what a day to forge the grunt call at home!! He looked around a while still standing on the edge of the cattails. I prayed to the lord he'd send the buck my way. It wasn't met to be. The buck froze and looked to his right where two does were in the wheat field, they saw him and took off, and soon he persued. My heart was broke as I stood in the tree trembling. I couldn't believe it, the largest buck that i've seen while hunting. He was easily and 8, maybe a 10 pointer, very tall g2's and heavy body. He, in my estimation probably 20 inches wide, Just a monster. Especially for that area in Ionia county. I wasn't the only person hat saw him though, my uncle which drove down the road saw him when he first saw him cross the wheat field. You all know where i'll be finishing my bowhunting until January First. This sighting has made my entire year hunting (so far) unless i get him that is.

There are more mature bucks out there than most people realize, even this late in the season. You can't kill 'em sitting in front of the television, cursing at the Lions

Aftershock, those mouth calls may not be the same, but they're sure worth a shot! I arrowed 2 bucks this year. I mouth called the first one in, and used it to stop the second one as it was trotting past my stand (hunting near a corn field being combined). This was my first time ever trying that, and it sure won't be the last!!!! Troutking, don't mean to be a monday morning quarterback, but I strongly suggest you give it a try if you're in that situation again. You sure don't have much to lose. Good luck finding him!!!!

You know..... the longer I am at this hunting thing, the more I learn to appreciate how those mature bucks get to be that way.

I know that the area that I hunt has many of them..... people see them all the time..... late at night and fleeting glimses as they run accross yards......

During deer season....... no matter how much scouting and planning I do..... those buggers are smart.......
