The thickest ice i've seen up this way is 3 inches. But that was before all the rain. I would imagine that most ice is now looking like swiss cheese.......This would be a good question to post on the Ice Fishing Forum......

Take that jibberish over to the ice fishing forum unless you are trying to create a revolt over here in the warmwater section. :D

Went over to selfridge launch around 4 pm. 4 guys fishing on 2 inches or so of ice there. you could see water bubbling from the holes when someone walked near them.

Me and my 9 yr old son stayed off of it! We fished from the sides where there was open water.

He wanted to go on it so bad, he bugged my for 30 solid mins! He even spoke about taking risks, oh boy! I told him there are good risks and bad risks! This here is a bad risk! Not to mention what my wife would do to me if we came home wet!

Anyhow, 2 more guys, came on the ice and started to whack'em, small size perch using spikes. Then 2 more guys came out with a homemade shanty, nice looking, and set it up. They also had a lantern, looks like they were going to spend part of the night there. I could hear the other people on the ice shaking there heads to that!

I want that 4 inches or more safe ice before I venture out on it!

to top it off the ice that they are on is not concidered new or first ice. sounds like you did the smart thing.

Not to mention what your wife would have done/said had you came home without your son! For a few perch, it wasn't worth any risk, something your boy needs to get into his head for the rest of his life.

Mk the first time out you should go with one of our groups or outings. we have one going on stoney creek lake. and one on Lake Saint clair in Jan. You can get the info by going to the Michigan sportsman outing forum.
You'll pick up a lot of fishing tips and safety tips. Your first time out icefishing you should alwys take someone that has experience. Us experienced ice fishermen already did all the stupid stuff so you won't have to. If you do decide to go to either outing look me up . I'll have extra rods/jigs ect to let ya use . PS wear warm boots and layer clothing. Good luck. Ice fishing isn't like fishing it's an addiction..

I am the person in the shanty. Ice was about 4 inches where we set the shanty up. Stayed until 9:30 p.m. Fished around 5 1/2 hours, and caught about 80 perch. Most fish in the 6 to 10 inch range. If your ever out there stop by and will tell you how were doing. Custom shanties are made to order!!

GGMshanties, nice homemade shanty!

Great job on the perch catch! Using spikes or waxies there?

What did you use for the black material and did you use 1/4 or 7/16 plywood for the sides and base?

No crappies, but alot of perch. Any bait seemed to work. 1 to 2 inches off bottom. Hopefully the ice will harden up by the weekend. Material is a rubber coated synthetic, purchased at a local fabric shop. Bottom and sides are custom made peices of plastic. I'll take some pictures and get them posted....
