Made it put to kent lake today. 2" inches of ice in 6 feet of water. Mainly fished on 1 inch of ice in the 8 foot depths. I know we are crazy but we had to get out. In only an hour i landed over a 18 bass, the biggest at a solid 22" inches, two 12 inch crappies, and a 10 inch perch. All fish were caught on gold swedish pimples fished clean. last year we killed the bass and pike in our kent lake spot, and this year it looks great again.

And yes you are crazy.
Please be careful. I'm chomping at the bit but I'll wait a few weeks to get on some safer ice than you guys were on.
But anyway congrats those are nice and before the closer date makes them bonus fish!!!

Although there is no fish worth sitting on one inch of ice in eight feet of water, here is a pat on the back for some dandys!

1 inch of ice in 8 ft of water....that means that at Kent lake you were at least 20-30 ft from shore, and a minumum of 30 minutes from a rescue...NOT SMART.... Read the post Sad News (http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55263)
Learn from it, you are way to darned young to end life so early..the guy in the post was at least 3 times your age, with 3 times the expereince...
Congrats on the nice fish, but they are NOT worth risking your life with thin Ice in these temps..

Crazy and lucky. You could have wound up like this poor guy who died in another thread going. Just think of your family. Fishing is fun but not worth risking your life. This is what give ice fishing people a bad name.

At least it's better than 0 inches;) . I chickened out at the last second. I seen there was 11/2 inches around shore, solid, but still. I just sat at shore, watch him nail bass after bass. I was about to go out, then, my dad comes in, says it's too thin, and it was started to crackle, and said matt was on about 1 inch of ice, so, i descided to stay;) . You think we are nuts, spreading way out, and just jigging with poles, and coming in after an hour. There was another group, two people, with tip ups, everytime a flsg went up(which was VERY frequent) they would RUN TOGETHER to get it!!!!! And they were sitting on chairs next to each other....i was VERY suprised they didn't fall through....that's nuts!!!

I used to go out on an inch, not any more! Sounds like you were the smart one. If we get all the snow that they say we might get, that 1" will be 4"s under water. Sounds like I might have to head north over the holidays....Patch
Come on Man:mad: I don't want to come across as rude but this gives a bad name for the sport. People have accidents thats one story, but knowing your in danger is another.

Nuts, Crazy, Just plain stupid! Stay home and play PSII or a few other things I won't mention! Was at Kent Sat. Morning, west end and it wasn't even close to being safe, plus the current thru that end doesn't help. Had a fellow fisherman and his wife, plus a firefighter (would be rescuer) spend almost a hour in the water on Kent before they got pulled out! Flotation Devices, (of course on) flare guns, cell phones, hell, should drag a small boat along and if it doesn't good thru you know the ice is safe. Never to young or old to think about "check out time"

I don't think you should be telling this young man what to do or call him Stupid. This is a great site and he is a good young man.

Telling a young man to be carefull or cautious is a good thing.
Calling him names is not needed!!

Be carefull out there. There was a good ice on Kent between turtle head and the canoe camp island yesterday morning, but the warm temps may have done that in.
The "pighole" is wide open, no ice at all. Don't expect to be fishing it anytime soon.
Have you heard from Statebull?

whoa whoa whoa
you guys need to chill a little.... or get out and fish. I am sure you guys telling him that he is stupid for going out on 1.5 inches of ice isnt going to stop him from doing it. As he said, his dad was there too its not like he just wandered out there in the middle of houghton lake or something. Yeah i admit i have fished on thin ice more than i dare say (and im not a lightweight by anymeans), but cmon its his choice to do it. Id say fishin out there is better than out drinkin and doin drugs like too many teens are doing these days.

I think we all need to think about going out on ice like that not for just ourselves but for the people that have to come rescue us if someone god forbid does go through.

I was right across from him on shore...he wasn't even close to falling in, he was about 50 feet from shore, it's not like he fell in, or, the ice was so thin he roll to lay on it, he was fine, there was actually around 11/2 inches of ice, which for his size if fine....tho risky. He came off of it in an hour, after he caught some fish. Again, there was people together, running all around the same part of the lake we were on!!!! There is no current in this area.....i could've, and was about to go on it myself, until my dad said we were about to leave anyway, it's not a big deal!!!!

Let me put it to you this way: My Mom would kick my ***** if she found out I was on 1 1/2" of ice anywhere ! And I'm 33 yrs. old! Seriously guys, be REAL careful out there. It doesn't matter what 1" "will hold", or 2" "will hold", etc. We're not talking ice in the freezer here. Lake ice is EXTREMELY inconsistent and unpredictable. Besides, you obviously are a good fisherman. I think we'd all rather read from you, than about you!
Take care and be careful!!...Sid

I'm glad to hear you guys got off safe without incedent. Remember, it only takes 1 fall through the ice, to learn your lesson. 2 things can happen when you fall through,,, 1. You Die. 2. You go home wet, with a valuable lesson learned.
I'll try to make this story quick, when I was in high school, a bunch of us went ice skating on an apt. complex pond,,( more than enough "safe ice". I had my skates off and shoes on,, waiting about 20 yds. offshore, my buddies were taking one more lap around the pond. Just standing there, with my hands in my pockets, all of a sudden the ice under my right foot broke,,, no sound, NO NOTHING, the ice didn't crack or creak or ANYTHING!! My right leg went in,, all the way up to my groin. I got out, no problem,, but talk about scary,, my foot never touched bottom. So basically what I'm saying is,,,, you just never know:rolleyes: BE CAREFUL!!!!
ps. needless to say,, before we went skating that night, my mom and dad said,,, DON"T GO, YOU"LL FALL THROUGH!!

Nice Bass!
I wore camo overalls out there and the woman at the gate started to get all worked up thinking I was going hunting. I thought she was in a huff about that until I explained I was thinking about going out on the ice. I had to drive off before she started beating me with her purse. They'd closed the lots I wanted to park at anyway, doesn't make it easier seeing those nice bass.
