Allright, we got the scoop on this past weekend (20th & 21st) now who's planning on coming up this weekend?
The family and I will be up to the cottage in Prudenville on Friday night (26th) and after a few checks off the "To-Do" list I'm planning on hitting the hard water in the afternoon til a little after dark. depending on the ice I plan on being out (south side) from the DNR launch, or mabey even the ELK's club. I dont know how the ice is out from Lyman's but I'll be stopping there for bait and a update. My radio will be on "8-0" (*FRS Channel 8, Freq./Code 0)
Hope to meet up with some other M-S'ers!

You know you're coming Lee! Ozzgood and I did our best impression of a blind squirell trying to find a nut last weekend. We need a team attack to get someone a fish dinner. We are thinking of friday or saturday just don't know yet. I'm game for both days. Forecast is cold up there the rest of the week, ice should be just as good as it was last weekend.

I don't think I can make it this time but you can never tell. If I do I will be on ch 7 code 0, read other post as to why. I will be up the first week-end of the new year. Scotty and ozz, if you don't find any other hot reports I would start where I was, if you can find it, at day break for an hour. If no luck I would move to the east where most of the people was that we saw last week-end. I think I was a little late. Good luck.

One Bluegill between 8 or 9 guys really stunk! But the action was GREAT! I almost wanted to salute because I thought it was Flag Day. At one time we got 5 or 6 flags in 5 minutes. I think that we must have got 20 to 25 Pike maybe more, I think we all lost count. No keepers! Scotty , AJ and I did our best to find the gills to no avail. Sorry about the pics guys I still have to learn how to set-up this new camera. I see I have to change the time too.

I must say I was very impressed at the sportsmanship of our fine member Doughboy! It was Sat, 27 at the south DNR Houghton lake. Arrived at noon and joined the pack o fisherman. Lines in
at 12:30. Doughboy stops by around 2pm and shoots the bull.
This is the first time I have met anybody from this forum on the ice. 4pm and still nothin but a lost at the hole pike. 4:30 and
I hear someone wispering at the shanty "hey Jigster, pack up and move back in around 100yds, were killin the gills"! In less than 5min we were set up and catchen nice gills. All in all 8 nice gills\sunfish were on the ice as we were headen back to the launch. THANKS Doughboy, There ain't many like ya around these days!! Now thats a REAL sportsman!! I'll pass it on the same way if I get the chance!

once again, i had a great time meeting more members of the site.... looks like we were in the wrong spot for gills, but the many many flags kept us all busy and pretty content. Couldn't believe not one keeper in the bunch, mostly just really snaky fish. Nice meeting everyone, we'll have do some more ice fishin this year together....
Anyone can get a pike to hit a shiner.... its darn hard to get a quickstrike rig inside a pike's mouth to hit a shiner :D

12-28-2003, 06:52 PM
Jigster thanks for the praise but that's what makes this site special (especially the ice forum). I wished I could've stayed out by ya an shot the bull more as we had a lot of laughs but the lack of fish set me in motion(by the way thanks for all the lowdown on the Hi-Tech). Fished Albight Shores in the morning with little success so on to Houghton as I read where some from the site were headed(forgot my radio). You were in the right area but just not that day. Hey Patch that picture was where the action was, starting about 4pm. The second shanty was Jigster with me right by him. Took home 24- (7 1/2"- 9 1/2").

Hey guys,
Even though I only caught 7 small perch, I really had a great
time on my first MS outing, thanks. You guys are great,
I look forward to doing it again! (if we ever get enough ice!)
Scotty, get yourself some ice cleats, you'll spill less coffee that way ;)

You probably won't remember, you were busy catching, but I came by just before dark pulling a yellow sled with my Jiffy on top. I stopped for a second and watched a few people in that general area pull a few up and thought about coming in and punching a hole but decided that would not be " Sportsman-like " so I just tucked my tail between my legs and kept walking. LOL!! I'm glad you guys did well. Maybe next time I'll get on them......Patch
Doughboy
12-28-2003, 09:14 PM
Yup I remembered the yellow sled and that was what I was looking for when I got up there. Had no radio but glassed the area for your sled but couldn't locate it so I thought you had gone in or was fishing somewhere else. That was about the end of the bite when you came by.

WHats the best area to land some gills and specks up there....Thinking about going out during the week, will be afoot from the south launch....how far out do I need to walk to hit them??
scottyhoover
12-29-2003, 09:33 AM
Lee we had 3 guys with vexilars running all around that lake, punching 100 holes and we still did not locate any gills from the south launch. Having said that I do have the numbers to where we were sitting on this little weed bed about 1/4 mile from the launch in 8ft of water. Those other guys with the nice pictures of specks and gills are fishing somewhere else and they arent saying where. Only other thing I can tell ya is some people were pulling a few gills right at dark in 5fow much closer to the launch than we were fishing. Of course we were leaving the ice when we found that out. Check ya PMs later when I go get my gps out. I might want to go up too, if they say the ice is still good there.

I forgot to post about the outing.....great times, lots of laughs, I met a lot of nice people this weekend.
Everyone knows my tendency to fall down on concrete first thing in the morning. I can't beleive we got the shaft on the bluegill situation when people just 300 yds from us were getting them.
AJ, patch, wishin, everyone else, it was a good time hope to do it again soon.

Grayrodbender; How hard is it to pull that sled with the Clam on top by hand that I got from you? I am thinking on taking it up to Houghton Lake this weekend and see how it works. If it works good I will put my old fish trap 2 up for sale. I would like a little more ice before I take my ATV. If you are going to Houghton look for me at the south DNR boat ramp, radio will be on ch 7. I might be there Fri.

Slowpoke, how`ve you been? I could pull that rig ok as long as there wasnt much snow.I threw all my gear in the jetsled strapped down the 5600 and went.I always liked when we had enough ice for the quad to do the work. Sir I plan on making it down to Houghton lake this week, than agian on the week-end.Hopfully we can burn some fuel in our quads! Got any pics of your fishtrap2 ? PM me some info, may be interested for a friend.Thanks.Talk later to ya.

Thank for a great time guys. It was nice meeting all of you. Sorry we had to show you guys how to catch all of those small pike.:D Adjusted and I finally got back home (Down here in our little corner of Michigan) around 11:00 pm last night. We end up going over to Cadilac and fishing there Sunday. Nothing but small perch. It looked like our weekend was nothing but small fish, but we had a great time.
We should set up an outting down here WHEN or IF we got ice down here.

Grayrodbender; I don't think I can go to Houghton this week-end [long story]. I'm still trying tho. Fish trap two is old but still does the job. I've had to repair it a few times. It's up north and I'm down here so I can't get you a picture. I need to try out the clam first to see if it's going to replace my trap. Like to burn some gas on our quads with you this winter. There is a lake north of Grayling that I went to a long time ago that has some nice pan fish in it, maybe we could go there. cya.

I missed out on the get together. Worked around the cottage and went for a short spin on the sleds. I didnt get on the ice until about 4pm on Saturday. I talked to AJ on the radio but that was about it. Didnt do worth a hoot. I got on the ice at the DNR launch but went west toward the ELKS club in about 6-8 foot of water. Didnt get into any gills, got a couple of hammer handles, no perch or crappie. Stayed out til 7pm, hoping for some crappie or "eye" action after dark but it didnt happen. When I got off the ice I was the last truckn in the parking lot! Sounds like a few did ok, more get togethers are in order!
Driving up Friday morning, I think. The afternoon/evening Walleye bite sounds like a winner.
