View Full Version : Muzzleoading for birds?
Hello, iwas wondering if anyone uses or has used a muzzleloader with shot for upland, turkey, rabbit ect...
I have never seen the shot for sale, just curious if anyone has any info on doing this.
Thanks,

The shot is the same that you use to reload shotgun shells with....as for wads, some use modern plastic wads, but most use the old fashioned cork, felt and cardboard wads that were originally used; these can be bought from Ballistic Products or most well stocked muzzleloading stores.
When starting out, most folks recommend that you use equal volumes of shot & powder.

I've got aT/C New Englander with a 12 ga. barrel and screw in chokes. I plan to hit the preserves in a week with my Britt and Black Powder. According to the Manual you use the same measure for powder and shot. For instance, 90 gr. of powder equals 1 1/4 ounce of shot thru the same measure.

Please see my posts in the turkey hunting section. I have hunted, sucessfully, grouse, woodcock, pheasant, squirrel, and turkey with muzzle loading shotguns - sometimes with shot cartridges I've made and other with standard wad combinations. Be careful using most modern plastic wads as it is alleged they will make a mess of your barrel if you are using black powder. Black powder burns hotter than modern powder and the wads will start melting as they move down the barrel. I have this from previous NMLRA trap and skeet champions. I've taken their word for it and haven't tried it . If you try it let us know the results. I can't speak for the substitutes as being a re-enactor I'm predisposed to researching and using original components. Legris
