Tuna fish, bread crumbs. Used them in the past.
Sometimes I use a small perch for "chum". Drill another hole next to you and put it on a safety pin for decoys and drop it in. It will attrach other perch and pike too if the lake contains them.
I like cheddar goldfish. Just open the bag and pour a few down the hole. They swim around under the hole for a few hours, but you have to use bigger teardrops cuz they'll hit those smaller ones. I remember last year when a guy one shanty over kept on catching the cheddar goldfish I chummed with. I pretended I didn't know what was going on. He said he hadn't seen anything like it before and I told him I thought I'd read about another exotic getting in our lakes again.:D
Actually, I've heard of the dog food thing, wondered if anyone ever used those real tiny shrimp that come in a can? They use them in salads, I think a company called Geisha makes them? I'm going to give them a try as bait this year, perhaps I'll chum with them, too.
Chumming is legal in Michigan, isn't it?

Ground up cats.:D
Don't know if they attract fish or not, but you don't have to answer annoying questions from the nieghbor such as " have you seen tabby lately?"
Just kidding. Don't tell PETA on me.

We use to use dog food chum whilst fishing shark in Florida. I never really thought about using it for anything else.

I like the Ground up Cats Idea, even if it doesn't attract fish

When you run and gun, do you have trouble with people hoppin in on you when they see you icing fish. Iv'e run into this on places like LSC. Someone sees you put a fish on the ice and next thing you know they are kicking your boot over to drill a hole.

I have used the dogfood trick for the past two years. I always put it in an old onion bag. Works great for spring time bullhead on our lake. Have never tried it for ice fishing.

Don't you hate that when it happens. When fishing Saginaw Bay for perch, just before we got ready to leave, we'd throw a bunch of fish from our pail out on the ice, and then start lifting our rods like we were getting hits, the guys would come running over with their stuff expecting to catch some, and we'd say " Well, looks like the runs over" and pack up and leave. They'd stay and fish our holes anyway.

is there anyone out there that has actually used chum for ice fishing with any success? something that might last a few hours would be great. not a miracle but an advantage would be nice...lol.

That crappy smoked salmon you get in a box for christmas. Put a ball of it in orange bag netting with a big sinker inside and jig it off the bottom. They sell canned salmon at Big Lots now too.

I use bread crumbs, rice, oatmeal, crushed egg shells. and sliced and/or
smushed minnows. They all work but shure raise hell with your vexilar images!

thanks for the responses....i will try the smoked salmon. i heard of a small balloon in a sock with chum, using a sinker to hold it down. the balloon keeps it off the bottom just a touch. i will let you know how it works.:) just a thought i guess.

I agree with sailor, use the same stuff. Rice really works well for me as well as egg shells.
