Just got back from Lakeside on Jefferson. They have plenty of perch spears in stock. Two models to choose from, one was $29.99, the other was $38.99.
Last year they ran out of spears early and never re-stocked them so anyone interested may want to get them now instead of waiting for Santa to bring it.

Tonga I might be interested. It would be great, if you could make one up and bring it to the M&G on the 18th.
I saw 2 types at the selfridge bait shop one with barbs -traditional. one without-just straight spikes. I guess the one with out barbs might work good and would be easy to make.

Had PM'd Tonga about seeing this pic last year or earlier this year, and thought it was him who posted it, but now I remember it was IFN.
Had put in an order for a "Tonga Model 001" and specified mine "without barbs". My experience with perch spearing (and it is a blast) is that you have more latitude if they have lock jaw and just put the iron to em. The bad part is if you dont have the right designed spear, you lose way too much meat getting em off the spear if you use barbs. Their not like pike and if brought up slowly wont come off (IMO).
Cant wait to see the proto, Tonga!

Here's something funny.
Last year tried spearing for the first time.
Couldn't find a spear for the life of me, finally found this little spear at Meijers, but it was just the head of the spear and I had to attach a handle which ended up being 3/4inch O.D. PVC tubing.
Feeling real proud of my homemade (Eric Special) spear I ventured out to get the lock jawed perch. Yep I was ready.
Well not knowing the technique, I used one of my nice $30 rod/reel setups with a spoon at the end to draw them in.
Sure enough a bigggggg one came to my hole, man this is it I'm thinking. Let the spear rip, along with the spear went my $30 rod/reel setup, through the trama of trying to catch my rod I kicked in some pliers. When all was said and done I had no perch, my rod/reel, pliers and spear were all at the bottom in 5ft of water.
It took about 45 minutes to retreive all my stuff
Thus, I bought a spear at Selfridge this year, and am ready to give it another try with the proper equipment.
Anyone else have a funny/strange experience on the ice.
Also once I see pictures I may also want to buy another spear TONGA.

ha! that sounds like something i would do... definitely.... I'm going to try to give it a go this year with the spearing. never have done it and it seems like a good way to put some in the freezer when the fish have lockjaw.

I was at Lakeside Fishing Shop II, the one on Grand River in Farmington, and they had a few PERCH spears. They are right by the door when you walk in.
