I am in the market for a power auger. I was cruising ebay and saw people claimining they drilled 22 holes through 24 inches of ice with a single charge on a 14.4 volt battery.
Has anyone used these? I cant' see a 14.4 volt battery competing with a 2.0 HP gas engine ? Does the battery power augers take a long time to drill? Do you have to be careful how much load you put on them, so as not to bog the motor down that much?
I'm a bit intrigued, as I have a 14.4 drill, and sure seems a much cheaper way to go. Maybe I'll have enough moneyleft over to get the Vexilar I want?
Any and all input appreciated. Thanks.

are you talking about using an adapter to use your drill and hand auger to make a power auger or the electric power augers available on teh market?
As for drill augers.... if you do a search in this forum for this subject, there should be a lot of info as this topic was a hot one last year.
I haven't used it yet, as i do not think it would be good for anything over 6" holes, and my 4" perch hand auger goes through ice like butter.

personally guarantee that you can NOT get 22 holes through 24" of ice on a 14.4 volt battery/drill with a 6" auger (MAYBE using a 4" StrikeMaster Lazer auger, but I doubt it). I can also say from personal experience that you CAN get 12 to 15 holes with a 6" Lazer using an 18 volt Ryobi. The speed is AMAZING. I was ripping through 20" of ice last year in appx. 12 seconds. I did try using my 8" Lazer with the adapter on the Sag. River and it was toooooo much load on the drill. Damn thing about melted so I went back to the 6" for the drill, and 'elbow grease' for the 8".

I agree, not even close. I do get about 4-5 holes through 20" of ice with a 12v drill and 5" auger on a well charged and warm battery. Not a ton of holes but it sure beats cranking.

Hopefully the next time we take to the ice I'll bring the gas 8inch and we'll make some swiss cheese.
