I plan on taking some photos on the ice this year and could use some pointers from anyone as to where do you keep the camara, inside a jacket or just in the shanty? How much does the cold effect the performance? Any hints on getting some nice pictures would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Tom

i kept mine in a pocket by itself that way there was no way it could fall out getting something else out and no chance to get knocked in the hole  really did not notice performance problem due to the cold.

Leave it in a pocket if at all possible..Once the batteries get cold, they take forever to process a photo. Mine is larger, so I wrap it in a towel and put it in my seat pocket, or in a hand towel an in my coat pocket.

If I had a smaller camera, I would keep it closer to my body heat.

Sturge,
The best advise I can give you is if you take your wife only let her hold the camera if there are no holes drilled in the ice!!! :D I used mine last winter with no problems or no special care. The need to come up with a camera and GPS that floats thats all I got to say............

See ya on da ice:cool:

What I do with my cell phone and camera, is keep them in a pocket with one of those Hot-Hands, hand warmers. Keeps them working great, and batteries last twice as long.

I wondered what the best way to keep it safe and warm also! This will be the first winter with mine! I purchased a real nice one for my wife...was afraid to take that one on the ice!! so purchased one for my golfing and fishing pictures!! That way IF something happens well, there isn't as much explaining to do! Hope to have plenty of pictures to post this year!! I have to recruit my son to help me load the pictures on though because I am computer Illeterate!

I just took the battery pack out of mine and kept it in my pants pocket. I also have and older shany with wooden covers for the holes. I made sure they were in when I was taking pictures. Didn't want to send an expensive digital camera to the bottom! :-o

i have a water proof case i keep my camera in that hangs around my neck and i can keep it under my coat. the good thing is that the case traps air so if i drop it in the water it will float(at least i think). also, if you keep your digi or phone in your coat pocket, MAKE SURE IT IS ZIPPED AT ALL TIMES!!! I dropped my phone down the hole last winter and at 80+ dollars a phone plus all the hassle i dont want to lose another. another plus about the water proof case is that you can take pictures through it (you need to make sure there is no fog on it though) enabling you to take pics in the rain.

I put my gps in my shirt pocket with the hand strap around a button and then button, that way when you bend over to clean the ice out of hole your gps or anything else does not go for a swim. My gps would not be with me if I had not did that.

I put my cell phone in a plain old ziplock bag. I dropped it in the minnow bucket without ill effects.

If the camera is warm you can take pictures in the cold or warm, and the batteries last longer. If the camera is cold you can use it in cold air, but have to wait for it to warm up to use it in warm air because moisture will condense and fog the lens inside and out blurring the shot. By placing a cold camera in a ziploc bag to warm, the moisture will condense on the outside of the bag and will not fog the lens.;)

all of the above suggestions are great. I only have one to give since my buddies and I have lost our share of items down the hole.
I can't think of what they call them right now but fly fisherman use them to hold their hemostats to get hooks out of fish. It is on a string and is retractable. All you do is connect it to your jacket or something on you and the other end to the camera. Most cameras have eye hole for it. I found this is the best solution for quite a few things I don't want to see sink because my hands get cold and my dexterity is terrible when my hands get cold. I sometimes feel like i have all fingers and no thumbs to grasp things.
We call them granny strings but for the life of me I can't remember what they call them... Old age catching up I guess. :)

Update. I found this at bass pro shop. This is what we use.
