that afternoon I decided to head out with my brother, well of course he takes about half an hour getting ready to go, finally we get going by the time we got to my uncle's there was probably only 3 hours of light left. But I went to the blind where I missed that 8 point last week and my brother went to the laddar stand. The temperature was around 55! I sat there for no more than 15 min when I heard some deer crashing toward me, I looked to my right and 2 does came crashing out of the brush, they were looking behind them like there was a buck coming, I thought, oh boy here we go! Instead 2 dogs a black one and a reddish brown one come in, they were some of the neighbor's dogs I'm assuming, anyway they chased the does off, then finally they ran off too. I hadn't lost faith in the evening though, since on the property next door they were harvesting some of the last of the corn in the fields. I thought maybe they'd kick something in my direction. Well about 45 min later I look across the field and see a single doe go by, a few more followed a few min later, but they all eventually headed north and out of sight. I got some good footage of these does with my digital cam, I might post them later.. anyway I watched them move out of sight to the north of me as well. All this time I had been using "The Can" every 20 min or so, and it seemed to be bring in the does, so I kept doing it. After the last group of does went by, I saw nothing for the next hour and a half or so (not sure how long it was really) but then I looked across the field and saw 2 more does emerge from the thick brush. Once again, these does headed to the north. by this time it was starting to get dark and I was starting to get ready to leave. There was about 5 min of light left when I spotted another doe, this one coming FROM the north in the clover field, she kept looking back and looking back. Well last night I had opened up the door of the tent blind slightly so I could see behind me and boy, it's a good thing I did! I looked behind me and saw the outline of a deer standing there, it's head was hidden partially by some limbs, I took one look in the binoculars and saw a huge main beam, I knew right then and there he was a shooter. Luck was with me as the doe continued to move south through the clover, and of course the buck followed, I watched him move closer to my position. Finally he started to move into the open in the left side window of the blind, I made a bleat call once with my mouth, and the buck stopped dead still exactly where I wanted him to. I put the crosshairs behind the shoulder and fired. He sort of kicked up his back feet a little, at least that's what I thought, and he ran across the field kinda hunched up, I heard him crash into the woods on the other side of the field, I could hear him crashing all over, then it became abrubtly silent. I felt good about the shot, but my radio's battery was dead so I couldn't get ahold of my brother or uncle and tell them what happened. So I gathered up all my stuff as quick as I could and headed out into the field just as light was finally failing. I looked, but couldn't see any blood. I knew that I would need help with him anyway, and since I didn't have a flashlight I knew I would have to come back. On my way out of the woods I took out my cellphone and called my dad to tell him what happened, I told him to come out as soon as he could because we would need help. I went over and got my brother, I tried to call my uncle on my brother's radio but got no response (he didn't bring it with him) so me and my brother went back to the truck and put our stuff in the truck and waited for my dad to come. he and my mom as well, came about a half-hour later, and we started out with flashlights, on our way out we ran into my uncle coming in and told him what happened. He suggested we go get his gas lanterns instead so I went back to the house with him while he changed out of his camo. I waited for only like 15 min but when you are in this position it seems like an eternity!! Finally we got out toward the field with the tractor and started our search, we soon found good blood right where he entered the woods, it was a pretty short tracking job, as he didn't go 60 yards before we found him. What a night! This buck is easily bigger than my first 10 point, my uncle's buddy said he was about 3 1/2 years old, and he estimated about 170-185 lbs live weight, he had obviously lost a lot of weight during the rut since his neck wasn't as swollen as my other big one. It will easily make Commorative Bucks of Michigan. My second CBM trophy
Anyway, this is probably all the deer I'll need for this year, 3 years in a row I've connected on a buck, this is my 4th overall. Can't wait to get some of that meat back, and even more the mount!
