Just bought a perch spear for the upcoming year. After last year seeing all the large perch that would not hit my lures and reading the messages in this forum about how well some of you did while spearing perch I decided that this year would be my time. The question that I ask of who you spear is what would be the deepest that you could spear and still be effective? Will perch jump the gun and scatter if too deep? Thanks in advance.
I guess it all depends on how long your spear is and how close you can submerge it without spooking them. Ive stuck em in 10 FOW. Next is luck. Last year my 1st ten of the year were speared. I try to get at least 3-4 ft. above them and drop it like you're throwing darts. I call my spear the Equalizer.

Hey Shad do use a normal little spear or a bigger homemader like a 10 point model or so? Im making one now.
The one I have is a 6pt. 5'-6'' long. It's a handmedown from my great uncle. He made it himself. He used it for pike spearing.

I have my best luck spearing in 6 FOW. The roof height of my shanty determines the length of my spear, which is about 5' 10". I tried spearing in 8FOW, couldn't hit a thing.......

My favorite perch spear looks like this:

Handle length is determined by the height of you shanty roof......
If your spear has barbs on it, bend them flat with pliers, or grind
them off. They tear the heck out of your fillets as you slide the perch off.
