U.S. teams sweep four gold medals in first day of finals

FLORENCE, Italy -- The U.S. swept four gold and three silver medals in eight finals Friday in the World Indoor Archery Championships.

American athletes won two golds in junior events and two in senior competition.

Defending world individual champion Ashley Kamuf, teaming with Michelle Ragsdale and Mary Zorn, clinched the gold medal in the senior women's team compound, beating France 254-252.

The Netherlands took the bronze.

In another final for seniors, Americans Richard Johnson, Joseph McGlyn and Victor Wunderle won the world title in the men's team recurve, beating Russia 263-256.

Other gold for the U.S. came from juniors.

Chris Glass, Ariel Heller and Ross Pulliam won the men's team compound, edging Sweden 257-256.

Marleigh Bogumil, Anber Dawson and Jessica Grant won the women's team compound title downing Italy 258-236.

In the women's junior teams recurve finals, Amy Green, Kristi Nelson and Roxane Reiman finished second to Ukraine, 241-258.

Ukraine also won the men's teams recurve title, defeating France 260-258.

Russia beat Germany for the bronze.

In the senior men's compound, the defending world champions from the United States lost to Italy by three points and settled for silver.

Individual titles for juniors and seniors are at stake in the final day of the competition Saturday.
